Description
1934 Riley 14/ 6 Lynx with the two door body.
I have owned this car for the last 27 years and in that time almost everything has been renewed, restored or fixed. All it needs now to make it tidy (if that is what you want) is paint and small repairs to the seats. I have been told that some of the paint is the original 1934 paint, which is why I haven't done it.
The work done includes:
New ash frame (original wood left in boot, hood cover and doors)
New radiator core by Cambridge Radiators
4. 77:1 differential fitted by Allen Clear
Gearbox rebuild by the Riley gearbox guru, with new bearings and conversion to MGB clutch. An original gear set was used with a slightly worn second gear.
New wiring loom fitted by Allen Clear
Rebuilt starter and dynamo
Rebuilt carbs
Engine rebuilt 1500 miles ago by a well known VSCC engineer with new conrods, pistons, cams, valves, oil pump, bearings etc. It is bored to 15/ 6 spec.
Brakes relined with modern high friction linings
Rev counter fitted
New universal joint by Sommerton Engineering
New springs
New rear shock absorbers
Rebuilt front shock absorbers
This seems to be a very rare car. There is an advert for this body type with 1934 wings in one of the Brooklands Books Riley road test collections, but they didn't seem to make many before the 4 door model superseded it, which many people regard as less attractive. This has a late chassis number, so I've been advised that it may have been built to order. The only history I have found is that it was returned to the road in 1984.
I have been asked why the wheels are different colours. I suspect that this is due to the colour of the paint, but I have a set of rebuilt black wheels to go with it.
I have also been asked how it runs. The answer is "very well". The engine is still tight from the rebuild, so I haven't pushed it past 3000 revs yet, which equates to about 53mph. Before it was rebuilt, it was surprisingly rapid. Even now, I find that I am being held up by the Devon traffic rather than the other way round.
I am only selling it because I have had it for so long and fancy a change, so I would consider a swap for a 12/ 4 Lynx (preferably a Sprite, or with a Sprite dashboard).
There are various spares that will be sold separately.
