Completed in 1957 in Porsche’s Zuffenhausen workshops, this spectacular Speedster was built as one of the very last T1 models of the year. Shown in a superb metallic silver finish with red leatherette interior, the car was – like most Speedsters – intended for the North American market, where the famous Max Hoffman agency oversaw Porsche importation.
The final destination of this Porsche in the United States remains unknown, the car having been registered as a showroom example. Its most recent owner, a German enthusiast with a remarkable collection, has now decided to reduce his fleet.
The Speedster benefits from a high-quality, old restoration and remains in excellent condition today. The work was carried out with great attention to authenticity: original components were preserved and carefully restored rather than replaced, while period-new Porsche parts were used when necessary. The interior features a wooden Nardi steering wheel, a Blaupunkt radio and an additional oil pressure gauge. The VDO instruments have been restored and the chromed elements re-finished by specialists. In its classic combination of Metallic Silver over Weinrot (deep wine red), the car still presents magnificently with only light signs of use.
Mechanically, the car has been upgraded with an period-engine paired to the sought-after 741 gearbox, delivering better performance and a more engaging drive, while respecting the original spirit. These discreet improvements ensure the Speedster remains faithful to its authenticity while providing real driving enjoyment. Remarkably, the factory markings on the front lid, rear decklid and the two doors confirm that the body panels are original — an exceptional rarity more than 65 years after manufacture. Even the fuel tank retains its original markings!
The Speedster is offered with its Reutter certificate, a copy of the factory Kardex production sheet, its jack, the complete tonneau cover and the original copper Rudge hammer. The engine starts easily, runs smoothly and delivers a solid, reassuring drive. The rare chromed 4. 5x15J Rudge wheels (dated and original) are shod with 2021-brand new Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres in 165R15. The odometer reads 1, 577 kilometres, probably since restoration, and the car has just been serviced (previous service July 2024).
This 356 Speedster will be welcomed at any concours d’élégance, rally or classic event, offering its future owner a perfect blend of originality, meticulous restoration, discreet improvements and exceptional rarity. With its original panels, high-quality restoration, sought-after T1 configuration and period-inspired upgraded mechanics, this Speedster truly ticks every box for the discerning collector seeking a car that is both fascinating to admire and thrilling to drive.
