The Appeal

If what you love in a car is passion and character, then a classic Alfa Romeo is almost certainly the car for you. Renowned for their flair and driving verve, Alfa Romeos from the 60s and 70s are brimming with style and often blessed with excellent drivetrains. This is exemplified in the lovely Giulia 1300 Ti.

Fitted with a 1.3-litre twin-cam that gives the smart little saloon plenty of get up and go, as well as a very fine soundtrack, this well proportioned and neatly detailed saloon is a charmer. Clearly well kept and presented in unmodified, factory specification, it’s a very attractive little classic – but one that isn’t so pristine that you’d be afraid to use it. Add to that the inherently practical four-door layout and, in short, this could be the perfect daily classic!

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1966
  • Purchased in 2008 from an Alfa Romeo workshop by the vendor, originally from Udinese, Italy
  • 44,550Km indicated on a five-figure odometer
  • Netherlands vehicle registration
  • Apparently the car will come with a paint thickness report and an appraisal report from 2021
  •  With the car comes an official document from Fiat/Alfa Romeo confirming the car as a ‘matching numbers’
  • We’re told that the car has always been stored in a dry, heated garage and only used in the spring and summer months

The Interior

  • Attractive brown vinyl upholstery to the seats and door cards, all presenting in excellent condition, with no sagging, damage or notable wear we could see
  • The cabin is finished with dark grey carpets throughout, which look to be in reasonably good order
  • Stretching across the front of the cabin, the dashboard is smart and simple, with some lovely design features that all present in very good condition
  • We particularly enjoy the wide, thin-rimmed Bakelite steering wheel and the horizontal speedometer
  • The rest of the driving controls all appear to be in good order, with a gentle patina but no significant wear or damage we could discern

The Exterior

  • We’re told that the car has never been restored, and is still in its original white paintwork
  • The vendor believes that the car may have been partially resprayed when in Italy
  • Overall, the paintwork appears to be in good condition and eminently usable
  • The bodywork is apparently also all original, with the panels looking straight and neat, with no significant corrosion we could identify
  • The vendor does note some corrosion beginning to appear at the lower portion of the front right door, which will require treatment
  • We also noted a reasonable sized dent to the left hand rear quarter, which will require some professional attention
  • As far as we can tell, the badging and brightwork all looks to be in good order, with some light wear in evidence, as you’d expect from a car of this age
  • The glass elements and light lenses all appear to be clean and free from obvious cracks or chips
  • The car is still riding on period-correct steel wheels, complete with polished chrome hub caps

The Mechanics

  • 1,290cc DOHC, naturally-aspirated four-cylinder
  • The engine runs a single Solex carburetor, as it would have out of the factory
  • Five-speed manual transmission
  • Rear-wheel drive layout
  • Disc brakes all round
  • Apparently, the radiator sweats a little on the top weld, but the vendor assures us there are no leaks to the cooling system
  • The vendor reports no mechanical faults or issues and tells us that the car drives very well indeed

Summary

If you love an enigmatic engine full of drama and personality, an Alfa twin-cam is perfect. Wrap it up in a fine-handling, pretty little saloon body like this, presented in unmodified condition and perfectly usable, and you have what could well be the perfect daily classic.
