The Appeal
The Pininfarina designed Ferrari 308 made its debut at the 1975 Paris Motor Show. The car was to join the range along side the controversial, Bertone designed 308 GT4. The original carburettor fed V8 made 252bhp at a screaming 7,700rpm. A GTS, targa topped version was introduced in 1977. By 1980 fuel injected iterations appeared to satisfy the increasingly stringent US emissions regulations. Controversially, power dropped down to 211bhp. All very un-Ferrari like. To right this wrong a “quattrovalvole” or four valve version was introduced in 1982 in the shape of the GTB and GTS QV. Power was now back up close to the original at 240bhp. Air condition was made available for the first time in the QV models.
This example is blessed with being in the most sought-after GTS QV specification with optional air conditioning. Given a considerable recent spend including interior restoration, body repairs and mechanical maintenance this example is reported by the owner as “a beautiful car ready to enjoy.”
The History and Paperwork

At that point it was imported to the UK and registered here in May of that year
Since import the 308 has been used and enjoyed by three owners

This was thought to be due to damage to the nose cone
The current, and third, owner the car in November 2021
During 2022 much was spent to bring the 308 up to its current high standard
The 308 is complete with a good level of paperwork
This includes the V5 registration document in the name of the owner

This is valid until July 2024
Numerous recent invoices are present

The Interior
The interior is dominated by the retrimmed sports seats finished in tan leather
The original Veglia Borletti gauge set is present, correct and looks amazing
Factory fitted with optional Borletti air conditioning, a rare enhancement
This is a fine looking, classic Ferrari interior finished in tan hues with black accents. The seats have recently been reupholstered in the correct stitched and padded Ferrari “fish scale” design in tan leather. The headrests feature subtly embossed prancing horse emblems. These really set the tone for this well-presented and otherwise highly original interior.
The dashboard is finished in black leather and features a tall instrument binnacle directly ahead of the driver. This is home to five, original white on black Veglia Borletti gauges. A speedometer calibrated in miles accompanies a tachometer which is redlined at 7,700rpm. A smaller fuel gauge, oil temperature gauge and oil pressure gauge are also housed here. These sit behind the original three spoke, triangular centred Momo alloy and leather steering wheel. In the stitched leather centre console, a water temperature gauge accompanies an analogue clock. These are just ahead of the iconic alloy gated gear lever. Air conditioning controls and other switchgear is also situated here.
Beige hued carpets with edge binding and black rubber heal pads are fitted. The door cards are finished with a combination of tan leather and carpet with black accents to the armrests. Behind the seats is a curved storage shelf with the shaped rear window and glazed, three quarter lights help flood the cabin with light. The corded headlining to the removable targa top appears to be original and in fine fettle.
Useful storage compartments are housed at both ends. In the nose is a spare wheel compartment, currently devoid of wheel. In the tail is a carpeted luggage compartment which sits behind the engine mounted amid ships.
The Exterior
The 308 is finished in classis Rosso Corsa red, surely the best for a classic Ferrari
Other than the repainted front end the paint is reported to be original
All the key 308 signature touches are here such as pop-up headlamps and side scoops
Accompanying paperwork diligently documents the repairs undertaken in 2022. This attended to damage sustained to the car’s nose in the previous year. The owner suggests that the paintwork other than the front end is original and the blending of the two seems to have been expertly achieved.
The Pininfarina design is one of the most recognisable and successful of this period and provided a nice counterpoint to the much more wedge shaped and hard edged 308 GT4. To compliment and contrast with the bright red there is plenty of black finished trim pieces to interest the eye. These include the vented louvres to the wing tops and the large engine cover. At the rear the quad tail pipes finish the sublimely sporting look perfectly.
Our car rides on an original looking set of Ferrari Cromodora 8J x 16-inch light alloy wheels. The condition looks excellent throughout suggesting they may have been refurbished. They are centred with bright looking, yellow prancing horse caps. A matching set of recent looking Pirelli Cinturatos are fitted.
The Mechanics
This 1984 model is fitted with the Ferrari Tipo F105 AB V8 mid mounted engine
Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and Magneti Marelli Digiplex electronic ignition was used
Power is fed to the rear wheels via the five speed manual transmission
With power back up too 240bhp in the QV models the 308 once again enjoyed the power to fully exploit its thoroughbred chassis and underpinnings. In original trim this endowed the 308 GTS with a top speed well in excess of 150mph.
In the current ownership much has been done to ensure this car’s driving experience matches its looks. The owner reports that the cambelts have been replaced together with the water pump. A new AP clutch has been fitted and the flywheel has been resurfaced. All the suspension bushes have also been replaced. Add to this the car’s low original mileage and the advisory free MOT and you can be reassured about the mechanical condition of the car.
The engine bay condition looks to be highly original and in good overall condition. Just some flaking to the red crackle finish of the alloy intake is noted. All numbers and data plates appear to be present and correct. The underside of the car looks equally good with some work undertaken here during the 2022 repair.
