The Appeal
Introduced in 1986 alongside the base XJ, the Sovereign was one of the highest trim levels of the XJ40 - and stayed on the market for the car’s entire run. Equipped with a six-speaker sound system, air conditioning, and a self-levelling suspension, it was a distinctly modern-looking example of a luxury car. When many of the big luxury motors on the market felt rather stuffy and old-fashioned, the Sovereign felt sleek and up-to-date.
This example, previously used as a wedding hire, comes to us in excellent condition, with regular maintenance keeping it in fine fettle. With only light signs of wear, this is an eminently usable 80s classic.
The History and Paperwork
- Built in 1988
- Spanish market example, originally sold by C. de Salamanca in Madrid
- In recent years has worked as a wedding rental car, until the company’s closure
- The car has undergone regular ITVs until 2017, with the closure of its rental company
- Since 2021 it has been kept in dry storage with regular maintenance and care
- Currently indicates 175,805km, which appears genuine

The Interior
- Stylish black interior with plenty of extensive walnut trim
- Very light signs of wear create a rather distinguished patina
- Dashboard is in highly original condition
- All original instruments and options appear present and correct
- We’ve not been informed of any technical faults throughout
- Wood veneers are clean and glossy with no cracks or splits
- All instruments are clear and easy to read with no significant faults
- The Jaguar-branded wheel is in excellent order
- Seats carry only light signs of creasing
- Door cards are clean and well-presented with light wear
- Carpets and headlining are clean and well-kept
- Boot is clean and well-kept with a spare wheel in situ
The Exterior
- Impressive angular styling with an attractive grille and headlight arrangement
- Bodywork in very good order with a nice, tight panel fit
- Some light dents and dings below the bumpers
- The paintwork is non-original and was repainted for its rental career
- However this has been done to a high standard
- Light paint wear towards the sills and arches
- Some light chips and scratches elsewhere
- The chromework is in good order, including the bright, iconic grille
- Glasswork and lenses in good order throughout
- Jaguar branding is all present and correct
- The car is sitting on its original pepper pot alloys
- Shod in what appears to be a full set of Pirelli tyres
- Underneath, the car is in good order with signs of localised wear
