One of the best-loved Italian sports saloons, extremely original and well maintained
Launched in 1979 and voted European Car of the Year in 1980, the first generation Lancia Delta, destined to dominate the World Rally Championship in the late 1980s and early 1990s, was a front-wheel-drive five-door saloon designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro.
Based on the Fiat Ritmo, compared to which it offered a stiffer chassis, more refined suspension and more powerful engines, the Delta was beautifully finished and well-equipped.
The 1.3- and 1.5-litre launch engines were joined in 1982 by a 1.6-litre engine with twin overhead camshafts for the Delta GT 1600 version, with disc brakes on all four wheels, revised suspension and lowered tyres.
The first high-performance Delta, the Delta HF introduced in 1983, took up the historic HF acronym, applied to the sports and racing variants of Lancia cars since 1966 and last used on the Stratos.
Featuring a turbocharged version of the 1.6-litre engine from the Delta GT, with a Garrett TBO-225 turbocharger with wastegate valve, air-to-air heat exchanger and twin-body Weber carburettor, it received improvements to the oil system, cylinder heads, dampers and steering.
The rather sober exterior featured a larger front spoiler, black side skirts with small 'turbo' badges in front of the rear wheels, air intakes on the bonnet and alloy wheels.
In 1986, the Delta HF turbo was equipped with a Weber IAW electronic injection system. With a power output of 140 hp, the new Delta HF turbo i.e. was updated cosmetically and in the interior, becoming similar to the HF 4WD version, of which it also adopted the four round headlights and rounded bonnet from 1991.
This 1991 Delta HF turbo i.e. benefited from all the mechanical and aesthetic improvements reserved for this model and features a bodywork very similar to that of the 4WD models.
The seller has told us that this Delta was carefully maintained by its first owner, who used it for his commute for many years and kept it in his garage, and that it has been preserved with equal care by its two subsequent owners, who are passionate collectors of the model.
Despite the rather high mileage, it is in very original condition, with bodywork free of visible defects still painted in its original colour and interior in good overall condition, with a slightly worn driver's seat.
We have been informed that in 2020 the mechanics were overhauled with distribution tuning and injector cleaning and that before the sale oils and filters were replaced.
The seller emphasises that the car is in good mechanical condition but could benefit from shock absorber replacement.
Registered with the ASI, it comes with its original number plate, service booklet and owner's manuals.
Iconic and attractive, the Lancia Delta is one of the most loved and desired compact sports saloons.
This car with its gritty and pleasing aesthetics may prove to be an excellent opportunity to get behind the wheel of an important Italian sports car, enjoying its fun drive and surprising performance.
