The Appeal

Attach the name Kevil’s Speed Shop to any customisation you know you’re instantly dealing with the best. Founded by Kevin Hill in 2009, it specialises in what are essentially rolling works of art. But if you’re here and you’re looking at this fine R80 custom, then you probably knew all that already.

Because this magnificent cafe racer is a paen to all that is great about that Paignton workshop and the art of customisation. Built 10 years ago and with the current keeper ever since, it began life as a R80 ‘Touring Integrated Cockpit’ but is a long way from that now. Incorporating bespoke features around a cafe racer style, it is finished in evocative Gulf Oil colours with custom black wheels and trim.

The makeover involved what the vendor describes as a ‘bolt by bolt’ restoration by Kevil’s, including a full rebuild of the 800cc 4-stroke, air cooled boxer twin. Since completion we’re told that it has been used sparingly for sunny days. The MOT records indicate that the odometer was zero’d when the bike was completed, since when it has covered around 6,000 miles. It is now MOT and tax exempt but was last MOT’d in 2023 with no advisories.

The joy of this bike is how tasteful the conversion is. That it works equally as display piece and usable machine only adds to its magnetism.

The vendor says:

“The bike runs extremely well and has very low mileage. It’s a Sunday bike on sunny days and is always garaged. It’s got a whole new life post restoration, never dropped, always loved, runs well, and starts every time easily. It’s not quite as straight through the pipes, but not offensive. The engine has no sweet spot, as it is 800cc and pulls all the way through its throttle delivery.

“Loved, however, I have several bikes, and it does not get ridden often or at all, so I need to give someone else the joy.”
