The Appeal
Few vehicles claim to be as iconic as the Land Rover, the first four-wheel-drive vehicle mass-produced for civilian use. Its business-like appearance, hardy mechanicals, and adaptability created a template for widespread adoption and commercial success, while aluminum body panels helped ensure that many examples survived much longer than their contemporaries.
This 1958 88-inch Series II was purchased by the seller 14 years ago, and has been used regularly ever since. The seller states they have been slowly restoring the car’s mechanical components; over time, it has received a new galvanized chassis, parabolic springs, new steering, a fuel pump, wheels, and cross-ply tires, and has been regularly serviced. The seller states that the rear axle “needs work”.
The exterior and interior are largely unrestored, though the seller has fitted more modern front seats with headrests. The seller says the exterior has “the usual bumps, dents and scrapes from an honest 68 years of love and use”. The split tailgate is present. The seller states that the bulkhead, which displays corrosion, needs restoring or replacement. Inside, the switchgear is reported to be in working order. The seller removed the NATO heater to gain more legroom; the heater is included, along with age-correct replacement door hinges and hinge-mounted mirrors.
The car is fitted with a Weber carburetor and what the seller describes as a “very unusual” gearbox-mounted PTO (power take-off) that drives both the side and front. The car is also provided with an unfitted Fairey overdrive unit.
This is an eminently usable Series II Land Rover, used regularly by its seller, and ready for its new owner to enjoy straight away. You can either maintain its charming patina or spend time further restoring the exterior and interior. The seller describes the car as “enormous fun”. It’s now time for it to put a smile on a new owner’s face.
