The Appeal
Mouths must have stood agape when the Giulietta SS first emerged in 1959. Not only did the Bertone-bodied Alfa Romeo look like something from outer space, but its performance was equally otherworldly, thanks to an unassailable 0.28 drag coefficient that made the most of Giuseppe Busso's dainty 1.3-litre Nord twin cam.
The Giulietta SS was originally commissioned by Alfa Romeo to challenge the highly successful, track-dominant race cars built by rival coachbuilder Zagato. Scaglione drew heavy inspiration from his radical, wind-tunnel-tested Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica (B.A.T.) concept cars of the mid-1950s. Seven decades on, it's every bit as remarkable to behold.
This example was assembled in Italy in January 1961, as confirmed by Alfa Romeo, and was first imported to the UK and registered with the DVLA in June 2013. The current owner, the second UK-based registered keeper, purchased the car in 2020 and has used it sparingly but regularly on summer driving tours across Europe. Finished in classic red with chrome bumpers and a grey vinyl interior with red piping, it presents well and is described by the vendor as highly original and in very good condition.
The vendor adds:
"If you are a true Alfisti, you will appreciate what a beauty it is."image.png1.49 MB
