The Appeal
Introduced in 1961, the Triumph TR4 paired the strong performance, open-air appeal and motorsport heritage of the TR3A with a wider, more modern body designed by famed designer Giovanni Michelotti. Upgrades included wind-down windows, a larger boot and a curved dashboard ahead of the larger interior. Underneath, the larger 2.2-litre engine improved performance, an all-synchromesh gearbox made gear changes smoother, and rack-and-pinion steering enhanced steering feel and response.
The TR4 also performed well in motorsports, and the Triumph factory ran rally cars, which have inspired this rally evocation, which was created by the seller after they purchased it in 2023, making them the sixth owner. Outside, the bumpers have been removed (but retained) and a rollover bar has been fitted, and the car comes with magnetic removable door roundels. The interior has a similarly purposeful look, yet retains its charming white enamelled dashboard and original blue seats.
Beneath the bonnet, the car retains its original, torquey engine and factory-fitted overdrive, while the front brakes have been uprated. The seller states that the“car drives well with the lusty torque that the original engine provides, stops very well, and the gears change precisely and overdrive engages smoothly”.
The car has been kept in a garage by the current owner, driven sparingly over winter, and inspected and serviced annually. The chassis and body present well, and benefit from anti-rust treatment. The car comes with its original steel hard top, which has been restored.
This is a purposeful and eye-catching rally evocation that offers an engaging drive and everyday drivability.
