The Appeal
The GT500 was crafted by Shelby but conceived by Lee Iaccocca. He wanted to transform his ‘secretary’s car’ into something altogether more muscular and race-themed. The GT500 did exactly that, utterly transforming the Stang into a formidable muscle car.
Every GT500 was taken off the Ford line and finished in Shelby with a host of improvements, notably the mighty 428CI "Police Interceptor" 7L 355bhp V8 and the first production integrated roll bar.
This fastback is one of the sought-after 1967 cars, of which just 2,048 were built. The trick when buying one of these cars is to check provenance and factory-correct specification. This car comes with the original build sheet and purchase invoice that enables buyers to do exactly that. Those documents guided the car’s restoration a few years ago, a comprehensive process that is said to have cost in excess of €100,000. Hundreds of carefully arranged photographs show the car’s transformation. It is now finished in factory-correct Dark Moss Green and retains its array of Shelby features, from the wood-rimmed three-spoke wheel to the roll hoop and those gorgeous polished ‘Magstar’ wheels.
The attention to detail and quality of restoration are genuinely impressive. You can see what we mean in the photos. GT500s this good are rare finds. This is a collector-quality, matching numbers car that is surely the ‘Holy Grail’ for any fan of Detroit muscle.
The vendor says:
“This 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 is the result of a complete, documented comprehensive restoration.
“The car was completely stripped down to a bare body shell and individual components, after which every single part was separately rebuilt, restored, refurbished, or replaced, and then carefully reassembled.”
