The Appeal
The vestige of finding, stacked headlights, pillarless profile, and an advanced straight-six, fuel-injected engine all explain why the W111 coupe remains so sought after. That demand has fuelled prices, which has fuelled restoration, meaning most have already been renovated.
Not so this one, which presents a rare opportunity for the right collector. Fitted with that fuel injected 2.5L straight six and a 4spd auto box and finished in attractive dark blue with caramel tan leather, it is a nicely specified car in barn find condition. We’re told that it has been off the road since 1980 and has very few keepers. We can’t confirm that, but the low mileage and provenance would support that sort of history. The vendor tells us that he acquired it from the Sharpe Family Collection, which has over 500 cars. It is sold with the valuable 10CUL plate.
The car is clearly for restoration and is reported to be largely complete, albeit with some parts dismantled. The engine is said to turn freely and it is sold with a valuable reconditioned fuel injection metering unit, which alone is worth a hefty sum. This 250SE coupé offers a compelling restoration prospect for the right enthusiast.
The vendor says:
“An excellent opportunity to acquire one of the best looking and rare coupes ever made, this would be a straightforward restoration starting from a totally original and complete car, essentially one owner, comes with a valuable transferable registration (valued at 3k) which the vendor could be keen to retain once the vehicle is restored?”
