The Appeal
For many, the 105 and 115 series coupés represent peak Alfa Romeo. A host of models brought together a light, Bertone-designed body, classic all-aluminium twin-cam engine with twin carburettors and advanced features including all-round disc brakes and a five-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels. Driving enjoyment, even with the modest power produced by the smallest-engined versions, was guaranteed.
The model also saw significant motorsport success, which is mirrored in the specification of this exceptional 1976 example. Outside, its gloss red body has been de-bumpered and features a duck egg blue nose and rear bodywork strip between the rear lights. The green cloverleaf badging, Campagnolo alloy wheels, large-bore exhaust finisher, bonnet roundel and amber driving lights complete the look.
Inside, the car is largely original, complete with faux wood trim and ribbed sports seats with height-adjustable headrests for the front seats. Frameless windows enhance the sporting feel.
Underneath, this car has received significant upgrades both to its engine and to its running gear. The immaculately presented engine has now been fully rebuilt to ‘fast road’ specification, with twin 40DCOE Weber carburettors, a lightweight flywheel and new pistons and camshafts. It now produces almost 140bhp, resulting in sparkling performance, and GTA-style intake trumpets contribute to a stirring soundtrack.
Other recent work undertaken includes the fitment of a new fuel tank, steering box, propshaft, upgraded brakes with 4-pot callipers, and ‘fast road’ suspension attached to strengthened chassis legs. The car is equipped with a limited-slip differential.
This is an exceptional example of a very desirable model that benefits from significant investment in sensitive upgrades that enhance both its performance and the driving pleasure it delivers.
