The Appeal
Named not so much for the fast Spanish dance as the distinctive sound of its 981cc triple, a loud, lumpy beat generated by its 180-degree crankshaft, the Jota was the fastest bike of its era and the first to reach 140mph. It was the brainchild of Laverda’s importers, Slater Brothers, who took the firm’s 1000 3C and, well, made it considerably better. High-compression pistons borrowed from the Laverda racing team, an aggressive high-lift 4C racing cam and a freer-flowing ‘Jota’ exhaust turned the standard bike into the ultimate track day weapon.
Just 2,500 or so Jotas are believed to have been built, of which only a handful survive. We suspect that this 1977 bike is one of the very best, thanks in no small part to a comprehensive restoration that touched every aspect of it. The work was done nearly 20 years ago, but it is a testament to its subsequent keepers and their regime of sparing use and careful storage that it presents so well today.
Resprayed in original Burnt Orange metallic with extensively re-chromed parts, it instantly explains why the Jota is so collectable. The large history file documents the work, plus other maintenance dating back to the 1990s. There is a £1,000 invoice from 2019 for servicing and other work. We’re told that the carburettors have been refurbished too.
This bike is a testament to the vision of the Slater Brothers and the care of its keepers.
