The Appeal
Always perceived as the fastest, rarest and most desirable of their particular breed, Homologation cars are built in short runs to satisfy FIA regulation and push them into the sports circuit. The Mercedes-Benz 450SLC 5.0 is one such machine: a lightweight, aluminium-bodied version of the luxurious SLC coupé, created to dominate long-distance endurance rallying. Against all odds, these heavy V8 coupés proved spectacularly effective with the modifications, and works cars driven by legends like Andrew Cowan, Björn Waldegård, and Hannu Mikkola ended up taking the top five places in their debut event. The 450SLC 5.0 would become the first V8-engined car and the first automatic to win a World Rally Championship event.
Just 1,636 examples of the 450SLC 5.0 were built between September 1977 and March 1980 - rarer than hen's teeth compared to the production stock C107. Each featured the new all-aluminium M117 V8 opened out to 5,025cc to produce 240bhp, along with aluminium opening panels that saved a claimed 125lb. Discreet bib and boot spoilers, contrasting grey lower flanks, and wider-rimmed 'Mexican hat' alloys distinguished these homologation specials from their standard siblings.
This particular example resided in Zurich for most of its life with one family before being acquired by its current owner, an avid car collector here in the UK. For collectors seeking one of rallying's most unlikely heroes, this is a rare and very impressive prospect. image.png1.82 MB
