The Appeal

The 242 DL is a two-door coupe from Volvo's legendary 240 series, often nicknamed the ‘Flying Brick’ for its boxy, durable design. Among enthusiasts, well-preserved, original examples are increasingly difficult to source.
This 1979 example is finished in Hellgelb Yellow over a 'time machine' brown cabin. It is described by the seller as having immaculate bodywork with almost faultless paintwork, a factory-original interior, and an exceptional underside reflecting careful and sparing use.
The car was purchased by its first owner in Massachusetts in April 1979, who is said to have imported it to Portugal in 1983. From that point onward, it is reported to have been used sparingly during summer holidays and otherwise kept in secure, long-term garage storage. Imported and re-registered in Ireland in November 2025, the car retains a strong sense of originality, and its condition and provenance make it a compelling example for collectors of Scandinavian classics.

History and Paperwork

  • First registered on January 21 1979 in Massachusetts, USA; said to have been used on a demonstration licence plate for approximately three months
  • Sold to its first owner on April 10 1979, by the Saab/Volvo dealership Bedard Brothers Auto Sales
  • Said to have been imported to Portugal in January 1983 by the same owner
  • Comes with its original sales invoice from the Saab/Volvo dealership Bedard Brothers Auto Sales, the original Massachusetts Certificate of Title, and a Rusty Jones lifetime rustproofing guarantee
  • Also said to have Portuguese inspection documents dated 2022 to 2024, and partial documentation in Portuguese documenting its import to Portugal, though the seller notes that a lot of this is legible but faded, and some was retained by the Irish registration authority upon import to Ireland in November 2025
  • It has been re-registered in the Republic of Ireland and the seller notes that an Irish registration certificate will be included

  • Described by the seller as having immaculate bodywork with almost faultless paintwork, a factory-original interior, and an exceptional underside reflecting careful and sparing use

  • The seller notes that the engine starts first-time and drives faultlessly with a smooth and comfortable ride
  • Garage-stored by its previous owner since 1983, used only during summer periods before being imported to Ireland

  • Rear-wheel drive via a four-speed manual transmission

We want a smooth transaction just as much as you do and as such we run all UK-registered cars and motorbikes for sale on Car & Classic through an online HPI check to verify that they show no insurance database markers for damage or theft, and have no finance owing, allowing you to bid with confidence.
✓ We also check whether vehicles are recorded as being written off as part of an insurance total loss claim at the time an advert is placed on Car & Classic and we helpfully provide write-off category labels (Cat C/D/S/N) for your assistance. However, the presence or absence of a label does not guarantee the vehicle’s status and it is always worthwhile carrying out your own  full vehicle history check before making an offer on a vehicle.
