The Appeal
Few classic fast Fords have drawn the sort of following that the sporting Escorts of the 1970s did. Compact, rear-wheel drive, and closely tied to Ford’s rallying success, they delivered accessible performance when new—and have since become some of the most desirable enthusiast cars of their era.
The Mk2 RS2000 sits right at the heart of that appeal. Built between 1975 and 1980, it blended the familiar Escort platform with Pinto power, distinctive styling, and a specification that made it usable on the road while still clearly pointing back to Ford’s competition image. As an ’80 model, this RS2000 comes from the final year of Mk2 production.
A long way from a standard, factory-correct road car, it’s been built with a much more focused brief. Refinished in Porsche Riviera Blue, it features a seam-welded and strengthened body, while the power comes from an uprated 2.1-litre Pinto engine, reported to produce 175bhp. The seller describes it as a road-legal, track-focused race car—an excellent summary of what it’s all about.
With its final-year status, vivid colour scheme, and significantly uprated specification, this Mk2 RS2000 should appeal to anyone after a fast Ford with far more edge than a lightly restored road example.
