The Appeal
Television's Jeremy Clarkson could drive just about anything he wants. He is by some margin the most successful and widely known car journalist the world has ever seen. So, isn't it interesting that by his own admission, Mr Clarkson spends most of his time driving either an old Range Rover or his GTV6.
Based on the celebrated Alfetta platform, the GTV6 is one of the most revered sporting GTs of the early 1980s. Its Giuseppe Busso-designed 2.5-litre V6, mated to a rear-mounted transaxle for near-ideal weight distribution, delivered a driving experience few contemporaries could rival — a reputation cemented by its memorable starring role alongside Roger Moore in the 1983 James Bond film Octopussy. The vendor recalls being driven to the Octopussy premiere in the summer of 1983 as a reward for finishing O-Levels, and later sharing the driving duties for the Le Mans 24 Hours between 1988 and 1990, during which the car was reportedly much admired.
This 1982 example has been in the same family throughout its known history and shows 103,000 miles on the odometer. Having not run since approximately 2007 and subsequently stored under cover at a London address, it is now offered as a restoration project. The bodywork is reported to have had no known accident history, though corrosion is present in several areas that will require attention. For a willing enthusiast, this is an opportunity to bring a charismatic Italian GT and one of the 1980s' great driver's cars back to its former glory.
The vendor says:
"The former owner is an elder brother and I have very fond memories of being driven to the premiere of the Octopussy in the summer of 1983 as a treat for finishing my O’Levels (the same model of GTV6 driven by Roger Moore featured in a chase scene), and sharing the driving to the Le Mans 24 Hour Race in 1988-1990, when it was much admired by other attendees (and killed Porsche 944s and Capri 2.8is at traffic lights!), Its a wonderful looking car - extraordinary in its styling I think for a 1982-built car - and I would sorely love to renovate it given its sentimental value to me, but school and university fees and a more pragmatic wife have intervened so its offered instead to a willing enthusiast as a project to make their own Chitty Chitty Bang Bang dreams come true and restore the car to its former glory."image.png1.57 MB
