The Appeal
Porsche was always looking for ways to exploit the potential of its beautifully balanced transaxle coupe, and before it chose to chop a 928 engine in half, it went down the turbocharging route. The 924 Turbo is one of the most underrated cars to carry the ‘Rossle.’ Quick, stylish and hugely entertaining, they are a clever buy compared to their more established siblings.
The Series 2 arrived in 1981, and you can most easily spot these improved cars by the switch from green VDO dials to white. Less obviously, they got fully galvanised bodies, making them more durable, plus higher compression to improve off-the-line performance and a power tweak. This very smart Guards Red Turbo is one of the best available, thanks to its low mileage, 30 years in a private collection, and a recent £4,270 recommissioning.
The vendor bought the car from the collection in 2024. It was in good overall condition, but its lack of use and some cosmetic issues prompted him to begin a sympathetic renovation that delivers the car you see in the photos. The work has included servicing, attention to the brakes, electrics, and suspension, plus a set of new tyres. The lovely Grey Berber interior has been refurbished, the windscreen replaced, and various decals, badges and trim items replaced. His description of the work clearly shows this was a labour of love.
The car is said to run well and will be sold with a fresh voluntary MOT to add transparency for buyers. If you know, you know and if you don’t, here’s your chance to discover a proper Porsche gem.
The vendor says:
“HMD 7N represents an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a genuine UK right-hand-drive Porsche 924 Turbo Series 2 with exceptional long-term provenance and an unusually comprehensive documented history.
“What makes this example particularly appealing is the combination of its distinctive Guards Red and Grey Berber colour scheme, 30 years in the same ownership, remarkably low recorded mileage during its later years and the considerable care and expenditure devoted to its recommissioning.
“The Series 2 Turbo is one of Porsche's most underrated classic sports cars. With approximately 177 bhp, a distinctive dog-leg five-speed gearbox, and the excellent balance of its front-engine, rear-transaxle layout, it offers an engaging, rewarding driving experience.
“Its purposeful styling, distinctive turbocharged character and relative rarity make it especially appealing to enthusiasts seeking something different from the more familiar 911 or 944.
“With 89,571 miles indicated, extensive supporting documentation, sympathetic refurbishment and a fresh MOT to be supplied, HMD 7N is a particularly interesting example of this increasingly collectable Porsche.
“It should appeal equally to a Porsche enthusiast looking for a distinctive classic to enjoy and a collector who values originality, provenance and documented history.”
