The Appeal
For a car that was nearly killed off in the late 70s, the XJS’ 1980s renaissance is truly remarkable. Alongside quality improvements, key to its rejuvenation was its success in the European Touring Car Championships. Jaguar and TWR quickly parlayed this into showroom sales, first with the 5.3L XJR-S and then with the more seriously reworked JaguarSport 6L car.
JaguarSport was a 50:50 joint venture between Jaguar and TWR. Each 6L 318bhp V12 was built at JaguarSport’s Bloxham factory by the same team that assembled the race cars. The revised car featured a stiffer suspension, Zytek fuel injection, and a body kit designed by Peter Stevens, featuring distinctive Speedline 16in alloys. These were expensive cars, and just 837 were built between 1989 and 1993.
This Solent Blue car is an early one, produced in 1990 and now showing just 109,000 km. It is factory standard and in very good order inside and out. There are light signs of age, but nothing that demands immediate attention, which is confirmed by the current Belgian technical inspection that is valid until December 2026. The vendor acquired the car in Germany in 2017 and has used it sparingly since with dry storage inbetween. Despite the limited use it has been regularly serviced by classic specialists, most recently in May 2025. Other investment includes suspensionwork in 2025 and new Speedline alloys in 2023.
The XJR-S is arguably the ultimate version of Jaguar’s much-loved GT and one of the last of the firm’s sporting cars from its independent era.
The vendor says:
“The car has been regularly serviced The engine starts and runs very smoothly
“A very pleasant car to drive, with a smooth yet powerful ride and excellent comfort. Its overall appearance catches the eye of passers-by.”
