The Appeal
In typical Porsche fashion, what was intended as a refresh of the classic air-cooled car became one that carried over just 15% of the old car. Notably fitted with coilover rear suspension to tame the handling, ABS for safety and power steering to modernise and ease the drive, the 964 looked a lot like an unchanged car, but definitely wasn’t.
The newness included, for the first time, the option of a Tiptronic 4spd auto box. Anathema to traditionalists, it is a very rare option with just 40 or 50 Targas believed sold alongside this 1990 RHD example. Today it is a canny choice, giving this much-improved 911 relaxing touring potential compared to the manual cars.
Of the handful of available cars, this Guards Red Targa must be one of the nicest. The 59,000 miles from new, documented by the service and MOT history, is barely run-in for the 3.6L flat six and is reflected in the paintwork, bodywork and interior condition.
The current keeper acquired the car in 2017. The service book shows a run of regular work up to August 2025. That month, the car received £8,000 of engine and gearbox work, including removing both units from the car and refitting them. The current MOT supports this impression - it runs to August 2027 with no advisories.
