The Appeal
As one of the last ‘airhead’ BMW bikes, the R100R has become an enduringly popular modern classic. Despite relatively simple engineering, it has always offered outstanding performance, and the example seen here is a late-line model which has led an unusually sheltered life.
Despite having recently been ULEZ certified, this bike has spent much of its life in a dry heated garage with its fuel drained out. It has covered an astonishingly low mileage of just 7,600 since new, most of which was recorded in its first decade of ownership. On average, it has covered roughly one hundred miles a year since 2006. Yet even when it hasn’t been regularly ridden, the transmission has been periodically turned over, with occasional ten-minute spells of running to preserve mechanical components in optimal condition.
The plastic saddle remains supple with minimal signs of use or wear, and a spare seat is available as part of the sale. The chromework appears to be in excellent order, while that black paintwork still catches reflections perfectly in sunlight; even the vulnerable front mudguard shows no stone chips or dents. The wire wheels look immaculate, with a Brembo calliper on the front behind tyres which have covered just 1,500 miles. It would be hard to find a similar vintage of bike in better overall order – one which has been satisfactorily run in, but little more.
