Description
1971 TRIUMPH STAG 3. 0 V8 AUTOMATIC
BEX 111J – Just 2 Previous Keepers – 79, 896 Miles – Excellent History
Recently arrived at Classic & Sports Ltd, we are delighted to offer this very nicely presented early Triumph Stag.
First registered on 29th January 1971, BEX 111J is a very early Mk1 example, powered by Triumph’s wonderful 2, 997cc V8 engine and coupled to automatic transmission.
What makes this particular Stag especially appealing is its combination of low ownership, believed genuine mileage and substantial supporting history.
An Unusual Ownership History
For a motor car now more than 55 years old, the ownership history is notably unusual.
The vehicle history records show just two previous keepers, with the first recorded keeper period extending from 29th January 1971 until 29th December 2025.
Finding any classic car of this age with so few ownership changes is uncommon and is one of the appealing features of this particular Stag.
The car has covered just 79, 896 miles, which we believe to be genuine and which is supported by the substantial history accompanying the vehicle together with the recorded mileage information.
Its MOT history records 79, 261 miles in September 2020 and 79, 896 miles in June 2026, demonstrating that the car covered only a few hundred miles during that six-year period.
Substantial Restoration & History
The history accompanying BEX 111J shows that this has been a cherished car for many years.
In 1998 it underwent a substantial restoration, supported by invoices detailing the work and parts used, with expenditure approaching £6, 000 – a significant sum at the time.
More recently, the car benefited from approximately £3, 000 of servicing and recommissioning work, including attention to the brakes, suspension, wheels and tyres.
The engine has also received previous attention, including cylinder-head/ head-gasket work.
Recently Prepared by Classic & Sports
Since arriving with us, we have carried out a further programme of careful preparation to bring the car up to the standard in which we wanted to offer it.
The bodywork has undergone paint rectification and now presents very well, with a deep shine and a smart overall appearance.
The front seats have been fully refurbished, including the installation of new backrest foams, improving both their appearance and comfort.
The engine bay has been completely detailed and now presents very well, including:
* New engine insulation pad
* New chrome retaining bar
* New stainless-steel detail plates
The boot compartment has also been completely refurbished and detailed, and underneath the car is very good, reflecting both the quality of the earlier restoration and the care this Stag has received over the years.
The car is currently fitted with a set of fully refurbished Mk2 Stag alloy wheels, which we feel suit the car extremely well. However, for a buyer wishing to return the car to its original early Mk1 appearance, it can be supplied on the correct Mk1-style steel wheels if preferred.
Mechanically
At the heart of the car remains Triumph’s charismatic 3. 0-litre V8, producing that unmistakable Stag soundtrack and coupled to the automatic gearbox.
The car starts readily, settles to a lovely V8 idle and drives exactly as a well-sorted Stag should.
It was presented for MOT on 18th June 2026 at 79, 896 miles and passed, with the current MOT running until 17th June 2027.
A Particularly Appealing Stag
There are many Triumph Stags on the market, but finding another early car combining just two previous keepers, fewer than 80, 000 believed-genuine miles, extensive supporting history, substantial previous restoration work and this level of presentation would be unusual.
This is not simply a cosmetically prepared Stag.
It is a car with a fascinating history extending back more than half a century, very few changes of ownership and evidence of significant expenditure throughout its life.
We have now taken that very good underlying car and carried out the additional detailing and preparation necessary to make it something we are particularly pleased to offer.
BEX 111J is a very nicely presented early Triumph Stag with good provenance, low ownership and a believed-genuine 79, 896 miles from new.
A very appealing example.
With a very distinctive numberplate
