THE APPEAL
The Morgan Plus 4 Drop Head Coupé is a rare variant of the range and was manufactured from 1950 to 1968 with just 433 of these cars produced during the time. As a late example of the collectable ‘Flat Rad’ model, this one is even rarer as the cars turned to use the more recognisable cowled radiator.
This car was manufactured in 1952 and has its original standard Vanguard 2088cc engine. The low production numbers were a direct result of the Coupe’s more expensive price tag due to the car being considerably more expensive to produce.
The more complex build resulted in a car with greater creature comforts than the roadster with a far more superior weather protection system. The car benefits from a fixed front windscreen, with two full size doors and an easily operated two position roof.
The overall appearance is one of elegance and unlike the roadster, the more upright rear profile offers additional storage with room for luggage which makes this car a practical proposition for touring with room for a couple of modest suitcases behind the front seats.
The Morgan still has the performance of its sibling but is far more practical and with the full size doors and taller roofline, makes it much easier to get in and out of.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Registered in 1952.
- Recent considerable expenditure.
- Lots of paperwork documenting the vehicles upgrades.
This car has had just two owners prior to the current one with the first owner having owned the
car for most of its life, where it had always been garaged and cosseted.
Although not required, the vendor informs us it will come with a full MOT, should the new owner require one.
THE INTERIOR
- Immaculately presented original interior cabin.
- Red leather seats looks fantastic.
- Brooklands steering wheel.
- Mahogany wood finish.
The upholstery inside the vehicle is said to be original with it looking exceptionally well cared for throughout. The seats are as bright and vibrant as one would expect. They, of course, show signs of wrinkling, which is to be expected but no signs of wear of usage from either seats that we noticed.
The same is to be said when it comes to the door cards, carpets and headlining which reflect a car that has been well loved throughout its life. There are no wear marks on the carpets which still look in fine condition, as well as the door cards and headlining.
Upfront, the dashboard, steering wheel and instrument binnacle can only be described as a work of art. The Brooklands steering wheel contrasts beautifully with the Mahogany wood dashboard, with both showing absolutely no signs of aging and both are generally free from scratches imperfections and pitting with the dials showing very minor signs of hazing on the glass that covers the instruments.
The buttons and switches on the dash are reported to function exactly as they were intended to do so.
Overall, the interior is a beautiful place to spend time and hours can be spent soaking up its oodles of character. Its timeless design gives the sense of an open airy space in what is otherwise a small car.
THE EXTERIOR
- Iconic design.
- Chromework looks fantastic.
- Bodywork and paint in excellent condition.
- Restored to an incredibly high standard.
- Black Mohair roof.
To some, the Morgan is the pinnacle when it comes to classic British motoring and there is no denying that this car is certainly loved by many. It’s a small car, especially by todays standards but its timeless design and gorgeous body lines look attractive from all angles.
This car has recently been returned to its original Burgundy paint colour in which it left the factory, with the wheels also having been stripped and powder coated to match the bodywork. It’s fairly close to concours standard with the fresh paint showing no imperfections that we noticed and as a whole, we think one will struggle to find a much better example.
The brightwork located around the vehicle is a compliment to how well looked after this vehicle has been. There are slight signs of pitting to be noted on the front radiator cowling but nothing that would be cause for concern. If anything the patina adds to the character and charm that this Morgan offers.
A great example of this is that the lenses on the headlights and taillights are still clear and show no signs of yellowing or fading which is usually caused by sun damage.
The door handles, badges and other brightwork located around the vehicle also look great, with minimal to no signs of pitting.
THE MECHANICS
- Rebuilt Moss gearbox
- Rebuilt Vanguard 2088cc engine
- Runs and drives exceptionally well
- Sealed cooling system with Kenlowe fan
- Uprated brakes to dual circuit
This Morgan Plus Four benefits from a recent full engine and gearbox rebuild, as well as the welcome addition of a stainless steel exhaust. The engine, when rebuilt, was upgraded to a sealed cooling system with an electric water pump and fitted with a Kenlowe electric fan thus alleviating any potential overheating issues.
It also has been upgraded to twin circuit hydraulic brakes for safety, a new clutch, replacement radiator core, alternator and high torque starter motor.
It was converted at the time of rebuild for use with modern fuels and fitted with modern lighting inside the original units. The vendor tells us that the Morgan is in tip top mechanical condition and completely reliable. The ash frame and bodywork, chassis and running gear we are also told is all in excellent condition. There is an extensive history file with the car detailing all the upgrades.
The Vendor tells us that the Morgan pulls strongly in all gears and brakes evenly. It is a joy to drive and keeps up with modern traffic. It is also extremely comfortable to travel in and ideal for longer journeys.
Once behind the wheel everything falls to hand and the precise Moss gearbox coupled with the smooth power from the Vanguard engine and distinctive exhaust note are a joy making this a true drivers car. It has that pedigree feel one only gets in the quality marques.
SUMMARY
Overall this car represents a perfect and practical choice for touring rallies or weekends away either here in the UK or in Europe. Attached to the Morgan is a rarity that will attract much interest from enthusiasts.
The car is ready to go to a new home where the only thing that it asks for is to be enjoyed by the new owner.
