Highlights
- Right-hand drive car imported from South Africa in 2015
- Benefits from a great deal of servicing work since its arrival in the UK
- Rally-inspired livery: de-bumpered with a black bonnet and spot lamps
The Appeal
Following Lancia’s departure from Formula One in 1955, it was the Fulva that would eventually get the company back into motorsport and, by the md ‘60s, Lancia were winning rallies all over the globe. With an unusual V4 engine driving the front wheels, the little Fulvia proved immensely capable on loose surfaces and, in spite of their diminutive size and power output, they are utterly fabulous to drive.
We’re excited to offer this 1973 right-hand drive South African import which has been assigned a rally-inspired appearance. It looks to be a solid and usable example that’s not too pristine to enjoy in the manner Lancia intended. The vendor shows us that this car benefits from a great deal of mechanical maintenance since arriving in the UK, with the aid of renowned specialists including Omicron Engineering Ltd.
The History and Paperwork
- Originally a South African RHD car
- Imported to the UK in 2015 and assigned an age appropriate registration
- The previous owner spent a great deal of time and money improving and maintaining the car mechanically since acquiring it in 2017, which is evidenced by the numerous invoices present
- Acquired by the present owner in 2022
- V5C present
- Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
- A history file accompanies the car, curating various invoices and registration documents
- Copy of the an original Series 2 Fulvia operation manual
The Interior
- Mostly original and in a good state of preservation
- Right-hand drive from new
- Toggle switch for the spotlights added to what was the hole for the right hand spindle of a previously fitted radio, so no new holes were added
- The wooden dashboard has been treated with teak oil recently so as to preserve its naturally aged finished
- The heater reportedly works well, although the lever that diverts the heat is apparently a little stiff
- The base of the driver’s seat has been recovered at some point although the vendor believes the remainder of the seat upholstery to be original
- There are a few patches and splits in places, which we consider rather characterful
- All the vinyl has apparently been treated in present ownership
- The door cards present really well with speakers fitted at some point
- The carpeting is eminently usable, with just some light wear
- South African spec, leather-bound, two-spoke Lancia steering wheel
- The headlining is reportedly in good order, although it has been modified to fit the sunroof at some point many years ago
The Exterior
- Red paintwork with a black bonnet, rear panel and front wing tops - inspired by rally Fulvias of the period
- Debumpered, although bumpers are apparently included with the car along with the bonnet vent grille
- Additional Cibi-Oscar style spot lamps fitted to the grille on a bespoke light bar
- Equipped with a Skylark sunroof, the vendor comments that it looks to have been fitted to a good standard and could be replaced with Britax or Webasto folding, vinyl-type roofs if the next owner wishes
- The chrome trims are all present and correct, with a few signs of age including the odd small dent
- The glass all appears in nice shape and we note the period ‘Lancia Club SA sticker’
- The vendor points out a stone chip in front of the rear view mirror and thus not really visible inside
- The paintwork presents well overall, with some imperfections in places
- Evidently, the rear valance has received some attention and it shows sign of some light age related damage
- The vendor points out a gouge in the paintwork along the rear of the boot gutter which isn't visible when the boot is closed
- Underneath, the chassis rails and subframes appear sound, with just a little surface rust in places
- The vendor comments that it is very solid, with no structural issues evident
- Period correct Lancia wheels exhibiting an attractive patina
- Aftermarket front indicators - owing to the lack of front bumper
- Overall, a bright and tidy example that’s not too pristine to enjoy
The Mechanics
- 1.3-litre V4 engine
- Twin Solex carburettors
- Five-speed ‘dog-leg’ gearbox
- The vendor informs us that they have changed the oil a couple of times in their ownership using 20W50 oil with a high zinc content
- The Lancia reportedly drives beautifully, with a great induction rasp accompanying fine handling and tractable performance
The previous owner carried out the following mechanical work, as is shown in the invoices accompanying the car:
- Complete brake overhaul, including the replacement of all four Girling callipers including new discs and pads
- The installation of a high torque starter motor
- A strip down and rebuild of the twin choke Solex carburetors
- The radiator has been re-cored and the sway bar re-built
Summary
A Lancia Fulvia should be on every petrolhead’s wishlist – and this would be a great car to scratch that itch.
With a history of good servicing in recent years, undeniably cool rally-inspired appointments and the fact that this is a factory right-hand drive car, all make this an example you should definitely consider.
