With the R100, BMW had a very definite goal in mind. BMW set out to create a motorcycle that would eat up miles, and in true BMW fashion was a very capable all-round machine. What they created was a beautiful and a genre defining motorcycle.
The heart of any motorcycles characteristics is defined by its motor, and in this case it was the classic Beemer Boxer motor. 980cc of longitudinal opposed 2-cylinder boxer, pushing out a respectable 68bhp (in this RS model). This is more than enough for some spirited riding and capable touring capacity. This boxer was also the last of BMW’s ‘Airheads’ due to their new regulations.
The revolutionary aspect of this bike is hard to miss. The new, frame-fixed full-body fairing was the first of its kind, and created an entirely new exciting category of motorbike- the sports tourer. This turned the R100 into a very capable upright tourer, which handled like a regular sports bike, and left cruisers in the dust.
The one we have here has a lovely creamy white flowing fairing, with lots of classic BMW red and blue striping. Gashes in the fairing reveal the boxer cylinder heads below, allowing the motor to breathe at speed. The fairing swoops back to allow room for the enormous bubble screen. There’s a lot of plastic to keep the weather off you at any speed and it comes with original detachable panniers. This bike has signs of its age, with wear marks on the tank. For the kind of bike this is, it’s mid-mileage of ~19000mls indicated is nothing. This is bike that has plenty of life left in it, and is an absolute steal. This won’t last long, so make sure this doesn’t slip away.
