A very original Bristol 401 originally dispatched to Bulawayo Southern Rhodesia in March 1951 to Glasby’s Garge for a Mr H. A. Lake esq. of Premier Woodworking Company painted in Azure blue.
Having spent most of its life in the warm dry climate of South Africa, this Bristol has never needed to be stripped and fully restored. There is no evidence of any repairs to the chassis or body. It has however had a bare metal re-paint at some point in a metallic colour close to the original blue and a re-trim in biscuit coloured leather both of which have now mellowed to a lovely age related patina. There are blemishes to note on the paintwork – two 5p sized dents/ scratches on the passenger door and one on the bootlid, these look like marks created from errant shelf items falling onto the car. The paintwork is very shiny and good condition however close inspection reveals some slight micro-blistering.
Although remaining in original condition there have been a few minor modern additions mainly for safety. Front lap belts, a fire extinguisher and ancillary flashing indicators to the front and rear have been fitted. The original semaphores indicators are present and working. Due to the warm climate there is no heater fitted as this was an optional extra when new.
The original matching numbers engine pulls well, has no nasty noises and has very good oil pressure. The gearbox is similarly in good health with a good gear-change.
Recent new parts - Front spring gaiters, radiator hoses, fan belt, high torque starter motor, handbrake cable, carburetor overhaul, steering column draught excluder, new fuel lines, etc.
Fully serviced including oil change, new spark plugs and distributor cap / points. Many small spare parts included with the car including two spare tyres.
This is a lovely, genuine example of Bristol's 401, retaining its original components and features. Arguably these 401/ 403 "Aerodyne" coupes' were the best looking of all Bristol's automotive production.
It is not perfect but it is a very genuine example that has been cared for during its life and as such is a pleasure to drive, it is mechanically on the button, has a lovely interior and a sound presentable body with shiny paintwork.
