Introduction
Here at Old Colonel Cars we are lucky to have one of the all time great drivers cars, the E30 M3. A perfectly balanced, light weight coupe, with such finesse current performance cars can only dream of.
The E30 M3 racing car proved to be the most successful saloon racing car ever, top of the leader board for touring car race series all over the world. This was the car all racing drivers wanted to have a seat in. This, from the very best touring car period, with the likes of Mercedes 190 Cosworths and Sierra RS Cosworths battling against it.
If BMW wanted outright power, they would have used a development of their straight six engines. But BMW wanted a light weight engine, that could be pushed back in the engine bay, providing the ultimate balance. They created the 2. 3 M3 engine, 4 cylinders, producing around 200 BHP, with a 7500 red line. In addition to this were the many bodywork modifications to improve the race car, most noticeable the boxed wheel arches and different rear window shape, to allow wider track and making the car more aerodynamic. Suspension and brakes upgraded, limited slip diff and on the European cars the 5 speed, dogleg gearbox.

This LHD example has covered only 101, 000 Miles (163, 000 KMs) and has had only 3 owners from new. Built December 1986, first registered in March 1987. Supplied to BMW Aachen, Koln Germany. The first owner, Dr Kirk Walde kept this lovely M3 for 13 years, continuing to have it serviced at supplying BMW dealer. Then, a BMW mobile technician, Hans, who had worked on the car all this time, purchased the car from his customer, the original owner. He then enjoyed and cared for this car for 17 years, perfectly maintaining this lovely M3. In 2003, Hans had the bodywork fully restored. Its a testament to his work, the car still looks amazing today. In 2017, the 3rd and current owner, a very good customer of mine, flew to Germany and purchased the car. He had inspected many examples in the UK, but none of them were up to the required standard. When he got to Germany and met Hans, he was delighted to see the condition of the car. Hans then took the car to the BMW main dealer where he worked, so the car could be properly examined on the ramp. My client was very happy with what he could see, so he enjoyed a fantastic journey, driving the car back to the UK in 2017.
Since being in the UK, the car has been looked after by well renowned BMW specialist, BMR Performance, including an Inspection II service in the last few hundred miles, including new clutch / radiator etc.

The Alpine White paintwork is in amazing condition. A deep all over shine, no dings or dents, superb. Look closer, all solid wheel arches, all solid around the windscreen, no rust bubbles around sunroof, solid sills and jacking points, solid battery tray etc. A lovely, solid example throughout.
Inside its just as nice and well cared for. The ‘hounds tooth’ sports seats are all in excellent shape, no wear to the seats, lovely solid bolsters. The same material is found on the door cards, again in superb condition. The dash is free from cracks, headlining all good and the carpets are in excellent condition.
The 16 inch BBS alloys are all in unmarked condition, all fitted with new set of tyres. The spare is the correct ‘light weight’ spare and is in lovely condition.
So to summarise, the condition of this car throughout is a lovely solid example that’s ready to show or enjoy now.
Engine / Gearbox
The 2. 3 S14 engine in this example produced 192 BHP. That may not sound like a lot by modern standards, but you have to remember this was a very light car. A heavy , more powerful engine would have ruined the balance of this car. The engine in this car sounds and performs perfectly. Let the engine warm up correctly, watching the oil temp gauge only fitted to the M3’s, and then explore the rev range of this engine. Super responsive, a lovely ‘M’ sound.
The gearbox on this model is the Getrag 5 Speed gearbox with the dogleg first gear. This is a delight to use, lovely precise gear changes. The clutch has recently been replaced so the transmission and clutch feel and perform just right.
History
This E30 M3 benefits from full service history. We have a full stamped service book along with a folder full of receipts from Germany, German ownership and registration details, then from 2017 we have all the documentation for its UK time.
Looking at the invoices since coming to the UK in 2017, the owner has invested over £5000 in this car, making sure this car is mechanically spot on. Everything was gone through, major items to note are new ABS sensors, Radiator, Lamp lenses, Distributer, All fluids, All filters, Sump gaskets, Sump pan, Both horns, Intake hoses, Fuel hoses, Rear exhaust, Propshaft heat shields, Clutch, Expansion tank, Fuel box lid, Refresh Cam cover paint, New tyres, Central locking along with 2 services including the Inspection II Service.

Work to do
This car is ready to go. Other than the very odd mark here and there, there isn’t anything to do. I would recommend in the future the sills need a new application of stone chip to protect them going forward. All sills are solid, just the paint has flaked in a few places and would be better re protected. This is a straight forward job, happy to organise this if required. Also, the fragile plastic engine lower engine cover is missing, this is to stop water splashing up on the underneath of the engine. Just need to find a suitable second hand replacement.
Summary
This car comes from a home of life long E30 fans. From this customer I have had Motorsport convertibles, M Sport coupes and now this M3. They are always excellent examples and the family really enjoy their cars.
This example has the perfect maintenance history and is very well priced. A good E30 M3 will always hold its value. With E30 325 Sports selling for over £50, 000 recently, this M3 stands up well.
