Descrizione
The 911 Turbo was created in 1974 in order to homologate Porsche’s 934 and 935 racing cars in Group 4 and 5 respectively. Latest FIA regulations required the construction of at least 400 street legal cars available for purchase through dealer network. Porsche’s then technical director Ernest Fuhrmann decided to incorporate 917/ 30 Le Mans racer’s turbocharging technology to the 3. 0 lt motor used on the RS Carrera. The significant raise in power necessitated a stiffer suspension, stronger gearbox and larger brakes. The vehicle’s stability was also addressed via wider front and rear tracks as well as a fixed engine lid spoiler for greater downforce. Soon after gaining homologation, Porsche engineers decided to develop the 930 even further by enlarging the engine capacity to 3. 3 lt and fitting an air-to-air intercooler achieving an output of 300 bhp and 412 Nm. The front antiroll bars were revised, the rear torsion bars were thickened and the brakes featured 917 race car derived 4-piston calipers over vented, drilled discs.
Throughout its production, the 911 Turbo’s race-bred pedigree, aggressive power outbursts and testosterone-fed body set it on a league of its own. Notably, out of all the colors schemes, no other could spell “mean machine” better than triple black (body, trim, carpets), often depicted in ads, posters, Hollywood movies and TV series. Even a 6-year emissions-based ban did not prevent the 911 Turbo from becoming an all-time icon in the US reflecting a sophisticated affluence of owners ranging from race car collectors to Wall Street stock brokers.
The 911 Turbo presented here was manufactured in January of 1987 in triple black for the US market. An Oklahoma City physician and later a Knoxville-based collector preserved it to its exceptionally authentic unrestored present state, recently awarded as A/ 2 Class by FIVA. It is now offered fully serviced with Owner’s and Warranty & Maintenance manuals, original set of tools as well as a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Klaus Zellmer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Porsche Cars North America Inc.
