Beskrivning
This is a Cooper Mk V - chassis number 51/ 51.
Originally purchased by Lex DuPont in late 1951 who exported the car to the USA and ran it in 1952 at various venues including the last Watkins Glen road race. It went on to be driven by Paul Richards [who later drove for Briggs Cunningham] & then to Bob Fuller. There are early photos & articles of its competition days.
It is powered by a period 500cc JAP84S engine with alloy barrel, and rare electron crank cases, rebuilt by Jan Nycz and still in need of running in. The JAP is mated to a genuine race version of the Norton Dolls head gearbox, again rebuilt and modified for better gear selection by Jan. It is fitted with a 1 3/ 8” Amal GP carb with twin floats
During its life, the Cooper passed through several collections until being sympathetically rebuilt on original chassis to “a very high standard”. However, this high standard, did not satisfy the next owner. Artisan Andy Blackman wanted to restore a Cooper 500. He had previously restored a fantastic collection of 250cc racing motorcycles which I was able to acquire from him.
By chance, I was able to find him this particular Cooper and he commenced a 4000 hour thorough and complete rebuild and restoration.
This painstaking process was meticulously logged with a description of every procedure and the reasoning behind each step taken, together with hundreds of before-and-after photographs logged. These albums are a wonderful legacy of the devotion spent on this special Cooper 500 racing car. It is now truly in Concours condition.
It is correct in every detail including crack-tested period wheels. It is offered for sale with new tyres and unused since Andy’s rebuild. Included are a host of various spares, exhaust pipes, sprockets, the original tyres and fuel tanks, the matching colour period trailer and custom car cover.
