Description
A stunning original collector’s grade example with rare hard top, low mileage and low ownership.
History of this car
According to the ACI report on file, our Dino was manufactured on 20/ 3/ 1968 and registered new in Italy on 5/ 4/ 1968 to a lady living in Trento. The Dino moved to Turin in 1976 and was in the long term ownership of the gun shop business of a Doctor from 1986-2002 when it was imported into the UK, where it had the one owner until 2018 when acquired by the current keeper.
Finding a good one of these cars isn’t easy. Most have been crashed, rusty, bodged or are missing parts. Not this example. It is that rarest of things in the world of the Fiat Dino: unrestored and in excellent condition in every respect.
Our car is finished in original colours of Giallo Positano over a black vinyl interior and is supplied with the very rare and cool looking hardtop, including storage stand.
It is of course fitted with the 2 litre all alloy/ magnesium Dino motor, which is identical to the one fitted to the “Ferrari” 206GT, a very fine thing indeed. Being an earlier car, it benefits from a lot of nice detail such as the knock off magnesium Cromodora wheels which were dropped on later examples.
Mileage recorded is 16, 500klms, which is credibly 116, 500klms, or 70k miles from new, given the little wear inside and out.
Since importation into the UK, our car has enjoyed much maintenance and has been reliably and enjoyably used.
Body
Our car wears an older quality repaint in the original Giallo Positano delivery colour. The paint presents beautifully with a thin, well polished shine. All panel gaps are good, and the hood is in excellent condition.
The chassis on this car is a feature, without any rust or accident repair, and the whole car makes for a knock out first impression.
Mechanics
The all alloy 2 litre engined Dino is in our opinion a nicer car to drive than the heavier 2400 which followed. The 2 litre motor revs and sounds better and this example is an excellent driver, on the button and ready to go.
In current ownership, much work has been completed:
Rebuilt engine fitted (nearly run-in)
Starter motor overhauled
Ignition overhaul with new points, plugs and fresh HT leads
Cooling overhaul with all new hoses and recored radiator
Fuel overhaul including new lines and rebuilt carburettors
New Facet fuel pump with relay upgrade
Full SS exhaust system fitted
New HD battery
Rebuilt alternator
New belts
4 x new Dunlop tyres on refinished Cromodora wheels
MOT expiring May 2022.
Interior
Unlike most examples, the interior of this one shows a lot of originality including the steering wheel, which is usually long gone. The black upholstery is in fine condition as are the carpets, and everything works!
Boot
As per the interior, very original with correct carpet, battery cover and full tool and jacking kits in their numbered bags, alloy spare wheel and tie down in place.
Summary
This is likely the best 2 litre Dino Spider available, and one of the best unrestored ones left. It is a preservation class contender at the better shows but not too nice not to use on events and high days.
Supplied with a good history file and original owner’s manual in supplying dealer wallet, 2 sets of original keys and ACI ownership report.
The cherished registration shown isn’t included and the car is sold with an age related number.
