Description
The Fiat Dino occupies a unique place in the history of Italian motoring. It was born from an exceptional collaboration between Fiat and Ferrari, imposed by the Formula 2 regulations of the late 1960s. To homologate its brand-new V6 engine, Ferrari had to produce at least 500 examples. An agreement was then reached with Fiat, which took on the task of integrating this exceptional engine into two mass-production models: the Spider designed by Pininfarina and the Coupé signed by Bertone. The name "Dino" pays tribute to Alfredo "Dino" Ferrari, son of Enzo Ferrari, who died prematurely and was heavily involved in the development of this dual-cam V6.
Introduced in 1967, the Bertone Coupé immediately captivated with its understated elegance, its four genuine seats and its excellent balance. More versatile than the Spider, it would indeed achieve greater commercial success, becoming one of the finest interpretations of Italian grand touring of its era.
In 1969 came the second series, the Fiat Dino 2400, considered the pinnacle of the model. Its Ferrari V6 engine grew from 2. 0 to 2. 4 litres and developed 180 horsepower. It is the same cast-iron block that would equip the celebrated Ferrari Dino 246 GT, offering a unique metallic note and exceptional mechanical character. Paired with a ZF five-speed gearbox and a limited-slip differential, it allows the car to reach nearly 220 km/ h, making the Dino 2400 one of the most powerful Italian grand touring coupés of its time.
This evolution was not limited to the mechanics. The independent rear suspension replaced the old rigid axle and transformed the car's road behaviour. The oversized Girling brakes, wider wheels and numerous refinements to the chassis made it a true GT, equally enjoyable on long journeys as on winding roads. The interior also benefited from a thorough evolution with a redesigned dashboard, new seats and even more careful finishing.
Another particularly prestigious detail: the Fiat Dino 2400s were no longer assembled in Fiat's Rivalta factories but at Maranello, on the same production lines as the Ferrari Dino 246 GT, illustrating the very close ties that then united Fiat and Ferrari.
This example benefits from a particularly reassuring history and a comprehensive invoice file. It has always received careful maintenance and numerous works have been carried out over the years to keep it in excellent condition and working order.
Amongst the most significant interventions are notably:
• replacement of all rubber bushings;
• complete overhaul of the carburettors (diaphragms, jets and renovation kits);
• clutch replacement;
• complete body restoration in 2019, with a fifteen-year warranty;
• complete interior renovation in 2020;
• major mechanical servicing including notably valve adjustment (report available), radiator restoration, replacement of all hoses, spark plugs, contact breaker points and routine maintenance operations.
Since its acquisition by the current owner in 2023, the car has been very little used. Only two interventions have been carried out: the replacement of the steering ball joints and the restoration of the rear wheel studs.
Before delivery to its future owner, a complete service will be performed so that this Fiat Dino is ready to take to the road in the best possible condition.
Rare in this state of preservation, accompanied by a well-documented maintenance history and powered by its authentic 2. 4-litre Ferrari V6, this Fiat Dino Coupé today represents an increasingly difficult opportunity to find. It will appeal equally to the discerning collector and the enthusiast of true Italian GTs, offering a remarkable balance between elegance, performance and mechanical nobility.
