We are pleased to offer this rather special and rare Morris Six Tourer.
The Morris was purchased by the previous owner as a project in 2011. Having harboured a desire to own an 18/ 80 MG the Morris Six was seen as a good basis for building a similar car as they share the same 2, 468cc chain driven six cylinder overhead camshaft engine.
The design of the delightfully smooth and torquey six cylinder engine is credited to Frank Woollard of Morris Engines who designed it somewhat furtively with the intention of providing Cecil Kimber, Morris Garages General Manager, the means to access the sophisticated high performance market. Both Kimber and Woollard came to Morris from E. G. Wrigley of Birmingham so knew each other well.
Despite William Morris’s disapproval of such an extravagant power unit, it first appeared in the stillborn Morris Light Six of 1927 and later in both the 18/ 80 MG and the improved Morris Six of 1928, an example of which is offered here.
The Morris has been painstakingly rebuilt in the style of an 18/ 80 MG open tourer with new coachwork in aluminium over ash and a fabric covering. The interior has been nicely trimmed in dark red leather with matching carpets and a completely new hood frame has been constructed and covered in double duck with matching front and rear tonneau covers and hood bag.
A great deal of effort has gone into the car with pleasing results. The brightwork is correctly all nickel plated, for example.
The engine starts readily and settles down to a smooth tickover. The 2 ½ litre engine provides ample performance and the three speed gearbox is pleasant to use. The Perrot shaft brakes pull the car up reassuringly.
The accompanying file contains a number of recent invoices, technical information and a copy of the original log book.
Sitting on new tyres, the Morris has had little use since rebuild and offers an affordable entry point into large Vintage car ownership and the camaraderie and enjoyment that entails.
We will happily consider a classic car or motorcycle in part exchange.
