Production of the R107 SL ran from 1971 to 1989, with cars produced from 1986 to 1989 known as ‘late’ cars. These facelift models benefited from improved braking and suspension, a new range of engines and some cosmetic improvements. Along with the lower front apron and flat-face 8 hole alloy wheels, these facelift cars also enjoyed new colours, an improved interior and more comprehensive options list. It is these late cars that are most sought after by R107 aficionados.
Of these facelift cars, the 420SL made up just over 2, 000 production units, far fewer than the more numerous 300SL, 500SL and 560SL. This makes a 420SL a very rare proposition.
The smaller displacement 4. 2 litre V8 is a sublime engine, less raw than the larger 5. 0 litre with a more toned down feel to it. A 420SL feels smooth and eager to please, slightly more responsive than a 500SL at slower speeds.
