A masterpiece of English engineering skills with a touch of Italian style, the Aston Martin DB4 was the forerunner of the most famous Aston Martin produced during David Brown's time, the DB5. An ambitious project, it was conceived as a completely new car from scratch. It was also the first Aston Martin to be fully produced at the Newport Pagnell plant.
Full of novelties, the DB4 was a car ahead of its time. The new chassis featured independent wheel front suspension and a swinging rear axle with trailing links and Watt's linkage. Four-wheel disc brakes and rack and pinion steering were also a technologically advanced innovation at the time, and Aston Martin clearly anticipated their use compared to their adoption by Ferrari. The most exciting novelty, however, was the innovative 3. 7-liter in-line six-cylinder engine, made of aluminum, designed by Tadek Marek and further developed for its use on the DBR2. With two SU carburettors, it was rated at 240 horsepower and developed the prodigious torque that made these DB series Aston Martins famous.
Starting from January 1960, the Series II DB4s received a series of modifications aimed at solving some problems that had arisen during the production of the first cars, while maintaining the original and quick appearance that had characterized the initial project. The DB4 / 339 / L chassis car was delivered in July 1960, part of the 349 Series II vehicles built.
Originally ordered in Desert White on black Connolly leather, the car on DB4 / 339 / L chassis was delivered new in Switzerland to its first owner, Dr. Gross. Dr. Gross had requested fully chrome-plated rear wheels and a heated taillight for his DB4, essential for the snow-covered roads of Switzerland.
Although the history of ownership between the 1960s and mid 1990s is unknown, it appears this DB4 never left Switzerland. At the end of the 90s, the DB4 passed of ownership, purchased by the current owner, who, in 2000, formally exported it to Italy, where it is still today, lovingly cared for, for over two decades, by the same family. . Now painted in Silver Birch, with beautifully patinated leather seats, this Series II of the DB4 deserves a closer look.
