Description
When announced, the MG Magnette was very unique in the market place, as mid sized sporting saloons were as yet not fashionable. Designed by Gerald Palmer of Jowett Javelin and Riley Pathfinder fame, the Magnette ZA first appeared in 1953. although sales did not commence until 1954. Today there is much to commend them to Classic car buyers, not least of all is the fact that when you arrive at a show in one, the chances are you will be the only one present.
We love a car with a story and has this Magnette got a story to tell. For starters the car comes with three box files of history, the biggest history file we have ever seen. This particular example is the ZB Varitone version, which has a slightly more powerful engine than the ZA and comes with 2 tone paintwork as the name suggests together with a bigger rear window and an extra chrome strip running the length of the car from front to back.
According to the Heritage certificate that comes with the car, the car was built at the MG Abingdon plant between the 12th and 23rd of July 1957 and finished in the two tone Birch grey and Twilight grey, the colour scheme the car still carries to this day.. The car still carries its original Middlesex regitration number and according to the car's original 'buff' log book was registered to a doctor from Upminster in Essex. The history file also contains a list of nearly every owner from 1957 to the present day. The history file also contains every MOT certificate going back to 1976.
In the last 25 years the car has had a fortune spent on it, including engine rebuild, a total repaint, a complete new leather interior, stainless steel exhaust system, new carpets and door cards. The car has obviously been subject to a rolling restoration over this period. There is a thick wad of invoices in the history file that add to thousands of pounds of expenditure.
For the modern driving conditions the car has an alternator and front and rear safety belts.
