Description
1989 Volkswagen Type 2 bay window Kombi Caravelle 9 seater LHD Watercooled 1. 8L
Up for reluctant sale is this lovely VW bus which spent a lifetime in the dry climate of Mexico and now lives with me in South West France
This is the sort of once in a lifetime oppurtunity to own one of these things at a realistic price - just when one thought there could be none left under 35 grand, Let's face it from 17 to 70 years old .. who does not dream of road tripping across Europe in a T2 on Porsche wheels and white wall tyres.
Firstly I am by no means a T2 expert . I have done nothing to this van except verify fluid levels it does it's thing and that is all I ask of it, The odd trip to the Beach at La Rochelle to burble along the sea front and enjoy life in the slow lane ..
This van is complete and presents well but it has been used and worked as a normal car really - so plenty of areas will need a freshen up if you want to make it 'new' again should you wish too.
I would imagine It will have the Usual T2 problems EG There is quite alot of play in the steering . A front anti roll bar appears have lost it's rubbers and is rattling , Gear links have play .
There is rust under the battery where acid has dripped and a little rust in the wheel passages. That said in general it will be a whole world cleaner than anything we find in wet salty Europe - Easy project to the right person who is equipped for this sort of thing .
The 1. 8 OHC engine pulls strong and is economical due to being over powered in ways . These would probably be the same as the old mk2 Golf Driver engine so should indeed accept GTi running gear or better yet a 20V Turbo install with cruise control and Aircon and a passat 5 speed box . A world of possibilities there really.
They will all end up electric Some day I would imagine.
Upholstry and interior good and original , Spare wheel under the front seat.
4 new tyres , uses no fluids or no over heating , Opening side windows. All VW branded window glass
Ideally one would run this bus for the season and set about tidying up when the winter comes - The next man will have his own ideas and plans, It would seem that a RHD conversion and or Pop Top would not be difficult eithar if one was that way inclined .
It starts drives and stops and im willing to deliver Europe wide - The logistics can sometimes be a block for a perspective buyer so I am happy to make that easy with delivery , Obviously I have some expenses there with todays prices .
A T2 draws smiles where ever you go and seems a simple thing to own - Real estate project forces liquidation
The Brazil / Mexico bus are an acquired taste with their watercooled grill , but some will argue that your getting a better product . I feel the Mexico bus being tin top bears a stricter resemblence to the original german Bulli . Obviously with a Devon conversion or Westfalia fit out these vehicles are closing in on 40k when made into new campers.
My asking price will look like peanuts in a couple of years from now and I have done that before but that's how it goes. , it can hapilly sit in the barn worse case scenario , Economic bad news only lasts so long and then the price of rare things just goes on up again .
I have all relevant papers including the customs 846A form showing that relevant duties have been acquited upon entry to the EU
