History of this car
This is a second series car and therefore benefits from the many developments Lancia introduced for this series including revised brakes and a higher compression engine with external changes including new larger alloy wheels and a new grille plus interior changes including a lovely Momo steering wheel.
Only 1940 of this run out, second series model was manufactured by Pininfarina and our car is the 217th of 253 RHD S2 Spiders made as evidenced by the Pininfarina body stamp, so is a rare vehicle.
Our S2 Spider, with its patented roll away roof and optioned with electric windows, Champagne metallic paint, tinted glass and air conditioning was registered new in South Africa on 1/ 1/ 83; we believe only a handful of Montecarlo Spiders were supplied new to SA.
Our example lived inland in the place of gold, Guateng province, and this appropriately hued Montecarlo was exported to the UK in 2022 and now has UK registration with all duties paid. Our car has 63k klms recorded from new, or about 39k miles, and is believed to be a one owner car for 40 years.
Certainly this is borne out by the awesome unrestored condition of this vehicle, with a “seeing is believing” rust free chassis and body, entirely free of accident or rust or repair, amazing and likely unique.
Since importation, much mechanical work has been completed and today this delightful Lancia is as superb to drive as it is to look at.
Bodywork
This is factory straight with absolutely no rust anywhere, the car appears to have never seen rain with factory plating still visible on many chassis components. The Champagne metallic paint is thin and even with a great shine, overall the car looks as if it’s only a few years old, not forty. Interested buyers are encouraged to view the chassis shots of this car on our website to appreciate what is on offer.
Glass is all original and without blemish.
In order to preserve this magnificent example, as part of the pre-sale process we have applied a thin coat of clear waxoil to the chassis, and cavities have been wax injected with Dinitrol products.
Mechanicals
This is a standard mechanical specification car that now drives in an accomplished way after much pre-sale fettling, including:
New ignition pick up and lead, timing reset, new spark plugs
Carburetor adjustment and repair, tuning
New cambelt and bearing
New auxiliary belts
Engine oil and filter changed, sump dropped and cleaned, new gasket
Senders replaced
Fuel hoses all replaced
New fuel filter
Cooling system flushed and new blue glycol coolant added, new hoses
Gear shift linkage adjusted and rebushed
New transmission fluid
HD Hyusa battery fitted with 5 year guarantee
New engine mount
On test, the car is beautifully balanced with an excellent ride, the newly tuned engine shows good oil pressure and makes plenty of power.
Recently the tyres were all replaced and the brakes and suspension have seen overhauls, and our car has an advisory free MOT expiring in June 2024.
Interior
The so stylish interior features original herringbone pattern cloth trim in good condition, the carpets are unworn and our car is equipped with what looks like a supplying dealer fit Hitachi radio/ cassette player with electric aerial. We have repaired some broken plastic trim as part of the pre-sale preparation so this cabin now looks and feels very special indeed.
Boot
Consistent with the rest of the car: no discernable wear, in mint condition with unused jack and mint full boxed toolkit.

If you want a best of breed unrestored Montecarlo Spider in perhaps the most fashionable colour, this is it. Supplied with a good history file since importation, original brochure, price list and manual pouch.
