1930 Rolls Royce 20hp Gill six light non division six Light saloon
Chassis Number: GVO47
Registration Number: GC2357
This car is in simply impeccable condition having had a stem to stern nut & bolt restoration by specialist Rolls Royce engineer H. J. Parker at the behest of his customer; a Mr Rawlins. A massive pile of restoration & service bills come with the car detailing the restoration & over £100, 000 being spent upon the car with the restoration culminating in the year 2000. Since then the owner of nearly two decades has used the car regularly but sparingly & is now parting with it due to his advanced years. The bills running to hundereds of pages are simply too numerous to photograph so we have just pictured a seleced few. Fiennes engineering did the engine rebuild & it was after maintained both by Sargeants of Goudhurst & also West Hoathly Garage; both experts in their field.
The engine on this car is utterly silent & possibly the quietest I have ever heared. When starting off the retard lever it is possible to miss the fact that the engine has started, so silent is its operation. A high ratio rear axle drive has also been fitted making for relaxed cruising at speed.
One of the very last 20hp cars produced, being a goshowk designated car. This little 20hp has many 20/ 25 features on it such as the centralised Bijur Lubrication system & vertical Radiator Shutters. It was not delivered until 1930.
This car was originally ordered as a Hooper Brougham Deville for use of Spains King Alfonso. Due to his abdication the order was changed to a six light non division car by Gill & was used by Mr Hanbury of Rolls Royce themselves as a demonstration car before being sold in 1934 as a used vehicle to noted Dealers Paddon Bros.
The chassis still has an export plaque on the bulkhead & the designation "for Spain" on the Rolls Royce chassis records. Under the current ownership the car has just turned its first 100, 000 miles making it a relatively low mile chassis.
The owner driver coachwork is by Gill & is finished in its original colour of Bergers Lapis Blue over black which suits the car admirably; the paint being in superb like new condition. Almost new tyres are fitted all round. To the interior is coffee brown leather in like new condition along with brown carpets. All woodwork has been removed & refinished to a satin lustre. A capacious period "Brooks" motoring trunk adorns the rear of the car.
Under the bonnet the car is very very tidy with its original bakelite coil in situ, under trays present & a sonorous Klaxon mounted to the bulkhead. A full rewire has been undertaken in correct cloth covered colour coded cable. The radiator has had a new core installed & as a consequence the car runs cool at 60 to 70 degrees with excellnet oil pressure. Being an owner driver car the vehicle is well suited to six ft plus drivers such as myself with adjustable front seats.
I cannot over emphasize how well this car drives. Gear changes may be executed seamlessly & the steering is direct, light & completely play free. Suspension is likewise supple & undulating. The engine runs with barely a murmur & one may be forgiven for thinking it has stopped all together when come to rest at traffic lights or Junctions. Given the vast expenditure lavished upon the car the asking price seems very reasonable. This car is of a standard where it may be entered with confidence to Concours D'Elegance events & have a chance of winning.
If not already sold it will appear on our stand at the RREC summer rally.
