Porsche decided to build the 1993 Carrera RS both to European specifications and in limited numbers in accordance with US regulations. These US-specification cars were given the name 'RS America'. The intention was to create a lightweight, no-frills 911 with minimal luxury options. The standard US Carrera 2 brakes, engine and gearbox were used. The RS weighed 2, 945 pounds, so it was almost 80 pounds lighter than a standard Carrera 2. Equipping the RS America with the M030 sports suspension package, which included the use of much of the 911 C2 Turbo's mechanicals, resulted in higher performance limits. The Turbo's progressive coil springs, larger diameter front anti-roll bar and upgraded dampers were standard equipment for the RS America, as were the 17-inch diameter C2 Turbo wheels. The RSA wheels were 7" wide at the front and 8" wide at the rear (unlike the C2 Turbo's 7" wide front and 9" wide rear wheels). It also had a very handsome 'whale tail' spoiler. In all, 701 cars were built as model year 1993 - 1994. ( source stuttcars. com) While the 964 was undoubtedly a faster and more refined car than the Carrera 3. 2 replaced in 1989, the all-new 911 received a lukewarm welcome from the faithful. Traditionalists did not like the car's heavy-looking bumpers and it was seen as a 911 that appealed more to status seekers than to driving enthusiasts.
Porsche faced a second criticism in 1993 when it unveiled the RS America. The name says it all: a RennSport {2. k. a. motorsport) for consumption in the U. S. The RS America was lighter, louder and decidedly sportier than the two-wheel-drive Carrera 2 on which it was based. Yet Porsche did so without altering the 3. 6-litre, 247 hp six-cylinder from the C2. So what changed?
From the outside, the most visible difference was the fixed, one-piece whale-tail, which replaced the C2's retractable unit. The interior changes were more extensive: sports seats upholstered in Porsche fabric and lightweight door panels and carpeting, removed the rear seats and much of the cabin's soundproofing, and deleted frills such as the air conditioning and radio.
(The latter two items made up half of the RS America's list of options, along with a sunroof and limited slip differential.) Also eliminated was the C2's power steering, which saved 15 pounds and, in combination with the standard 030 sports suspension, transformed the car's handling.
The enthusiastic press loved it. While acknowledging that the car was not for everyone, Sports Car International called the RS America 'a Porsche as Porsche used to build, as die-hards used to buy. In the Excellence review, we described it as having 'a fundamental honesty and clarity of purpose that takes this manufacturer back to its racing roots.
Enthusiasm remains high for the RS America. When new, this model cost $10, 000 less than a standard C2, while today one costs much more. One reason is rarity. Porsche built 701 RS Americas in 1993 and 1994 (the rear seats reappeared in the last year) out of a total production of more than 6, 000 C2 USA coupes.
