This Mk1 Ford Escort Mexico tribute is an eye-catching and faithful recreation of the marque’s iconic classic, which has been enhanced with discerning performance upgrades, and benefits from a comprehensive rebuild.
Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 2. 0-litre ‘Pinto’ inline-four, understood to produce up to 110bhp and driving the rear wheels via a four-speed ‘Type 9’ manual transmission.
This example was originally a 1300L automatic model, which was fully stripped-down and rebuilt to a very high standard as a Mexico tribute in 2010.
This Escort has been with the seller for nearly eight years, and the odometer indicates 70, 882 miles, however this is not warranted. Originally finished in Tawny Brown Metallic with a Chocolate cloth-trimmed interior, this Escort has been repainted in the vibrant hue of Olympic Blue with gloss-black ‘Mexico’ side decals, roof stripes, and boot lid decal, over a blue vinyl-trimmed interior, with a complementary black dashboard and carpets, and handsome wood trim on the upper door cards.
It rides on an aftermarket set of 13-inch Minilite alloy wheels finished in silver with polished lips, which are fitted with Nankang Toursport 611 tyres.
The factory specification includes manually operated windows, an analogue clock, and heater and ventilation controls.
This Escort now features a three-spoke ‘RS’ steering wheel, extended ‘bubble’ wheel arches, a six-dial instrument cluster, chassis strengthening including the chassis rails and flitch plates, anti-tramp bars, an anti-dive kit, a 22mm anti-roll bar, upgraded shock absorbers and springs, a quick-shift kit, and vented front brake discs.
As noted above, the original 1. 3-litre engine has been replaced by a 2. 0-lite ‘Pinto’ unit, which has been upgraded with a strengthened 205 block, cylinder head modifications, a K&N air filter, and a 4-2-1 Ashley Sports exhaust system.
The original automatic transmission has also been replaced with a four-speed ‘Type 9’ manual gearbox.
The car is accompanied by minimal service history.
CONDITION
The resprayed Olympic Blue paintwork is described by the seller as being in excellent overall condition, though there are minor stone chips on the front grille panel, and scuffs on the alloy wheels.
Inside, the cabin is presented in excellent order. There are a few small blemishes on the driver’s seat bolster, and discolouration on the dashboard switches, but no substantial signs of wear.
The seller is not aware of any mechanical or electrical faults with the car.
The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 28 July 2021 at 70, 859 miles, resulting in a clean, first-time pass. The seller notes that a fresh MOT test will be carried out before the car is handed over to its new keeper.
SERVICE HISTORY
This Escort’s comprehensive rebuild included the body shell being stripped down to bare metal, the inner arches, door shuts and boot repaired, chassis strengthening added, the interior retrimmed, a full respray, and the gearbox rebuilt.
