Our Fuego is an uncommonly fine example of the GTX model and has clearly been pampered by just two careful owners for all its four-decades long life, which is backed by an extensive history and receipt file. Documentation starts with the original purchase receipt from Mantello Motors of North Melbourne dated May 14, 1985 and includes a hand-written log book carefully recording every journey undertaken by both owners.
Delivered to Benalla in country Victoria (the dry climate undoubtably contributing to the car’s solid bodywork), the Fuego was driven regularly until 2008 when the elderly owner reluctantly handed in his licence and the car spent the period 2009-2013 carefully stored in his garage. Attracted by the Renault’s originality and impressive condition, the current Sydney owner purchased the Fuego in 2013 with just over 130, 000 kms on the clock and continued the car’s impeccable maintenance record. A collector of French cars and active club member, our vendor added just over 10, 000 kms over the past decade and the receipt file indicates no expense has been spared maintaining the Fuego. Aside from routine servicing, notable work includes:
· Overhauling the carburettor (2016)
· Rear brakes overhauled (2018)
· Engine mounts replaced (2020)
· New timing belts & A/ C belts (2021)
· Gear linkage replaced (2022)
· Cooling system overhauled (2023)
· Steering coupling replaced (2024)
· Air conditioning re-gassed (2024)
In strong cosmetic and mechanical condition, the Fuego’s silver duco has been professionally repainted in the current ownership due to some fading on one guard but the interior remains pleasingly original, with very little wear evident.
Accompanying the Renault is a folder containing the original books (including a radio manual for the Pioneer radio/ cassette system), original Fuego sales brochure plus a workshop manual, wiring diagram manual and spare keys.
