SLJ Hackett are delighted to present a stunning example of one of the most exclusive models produced at the Bristol Car Division factory in Filton, Bristol.
This 1949 Bristol 402 Drophead Coupe is 1 of 20 ever produced and is considered by many as one of the most interesting and desirable cars produced under the Bristol name.
NPF 2 was originally dispatched by Anthony Crook Motors along with the sister car NPF 1 to Jean Simmonds and Stewart Granger both world renowned British Hollywood actors. Both NPF 1 & NPF 2 delivered to Granger & Simmonds ahead of tying the knot in 1950. Following Anthony Crook’s very successful racing career he became friendly with a young Jimmy car enthusiast Jimmy Stewart who owned a Frazer Nash BMW 328. Jimmy soon became a famous Hollywood film star under the assumed name of Stewart Granger. Granger shipped out his 402 NPF 1 to California as this is where he spent most of his time during the 50’s, but since then NPF 1 has disappeared. There isn’t a record of when Jean Simmonds sold NPF 2 but we can assume it was mid-late 50’s. In 1958 the car developed some engine problems which Anthony Crook solved by fitting one of his Frazer Nash sports engines (FNS) that were usually fitted into Frazer Nash Le-Mans Replicas, the engine is still fitted in the car today.
During the ownership of a J. A. B Taylor in 2001 large amount of restoration work was carried out with recognised experts of the marque. The complete body has been restored and finished in the original colour specification Cambridge Grey. The engine has been rebuilt along with the gearbox and fitment of a J Type overdrive. He rallied the car extensively both in Europe and South Africa.
