Description
When the handcrafted Jaguar E-Type with license plate 77 RW was driven from Coventry to Geneva in March 1961 to be presented at the Motor Show alongside the coupe with license plate 9600 HP, it made history. Never before had a car evoked such passionate feelings and British pride.
60 years later, Jaguar Classic celebrates the re-reveal of an icon with six matched pairs of vehicles – consisting of restored E-Type cars inspired by the 9600 HP coupe and the 77 RW roadster.
1961: TWO EPIC JOURNEYS
The first E-Type caused a sensation at its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show and was driven to the event by Jaguar's managing director, Bob Berry, from the UK after being tested by a handpicked selection of journalists. Bob had little time for the journey through France and arrived just 20 minutes before the flashbulbs of the press premiere.
The car, a coupe, bore the license plate 9600 HP.
Following the incredible public reaction, Sir William Lyons, the founder and head of Jaguar, ordered another car to be sent from Browns Lane. The legendary Jaguar test driver Norman Dewis dropped everything and drove the 77 RW, a roadster, through the night to join 9600 HP in Geneva, arriving just 11 hours after leaving the factory with an average speed of 69 mph (113 km/ h) – a journey that remains part of Jaguar folklore to this day.
Our paired vehicles from the E-Type 60 Collection capture the spirit of the originals and offer the rare opportunity to own a tribute to two of the most iconic E-Types of all time. Based on the 3. 8-litre models from 1963, both come with carefully selected enhancements and feature 60th Anniversary details unique to these vehicles.
Each model of the 60th Edition is painted in a unique colour inspired by the 1961 predecessors, never to be repeated. A bespoke exterior emblem designed by Jaguar Design Director Julian Thomson provides the final, subtle visual enhancement.
The 60s pair exhibited here is one of the six built pairs available for sale worldwide.
