Description
1963 Morris Minor 1000, Rare “Dual Personality” Example
At Fine Lines Classic Cars we have recently taken this characterful Morris Minor 1000 in part exchange, and it is a wonderful example of the much loved “Moggy”.
An unusual and very charming 1963 Morris Minor 1000, recognised by enthusiasts within the Morris Minor fraternity as the so called “Dual Personality” Moggy. These transitional cars combine distinctive features from two different generations of the Minor, giving them a character all of their own and making them particularly interesting to knowledgeable collectors.
This example retains several charming details carried over from the earlier split-screen era cars, including the delightful “clap-hand” windscreen wipers, the traditional pull-start and the earlier style seat trim. At the same time it benefits from the later and more powerful 1098cc engine together with modern flashing indicators, replacing the original semaphore trafficators. It also benefits from an unleaded head conversion, allowing it to run on modern unleaded fuel with no issues. The result is a wonderful blend of early Minor character with later mechanical improvements.
The ownership history is quite remarkable. The first owner kept the car for an impressive 45 years, followed by a second owner who cared for it for a further 13 years. The most recent local owner has enjoyed the car for the past four years. Such long periods of custodianship often speak volumes about a car’s appeal and the care it has received.
Showing a genuine 72, 000 miles, the car appears very original throughout and has clearly been well maintained over the years. The panels present extremely well and the underside is solid and well protected, suggesting a car that has been carefully looked after rather than heavily restored.
Recent maintenance includes new matching radial tyres, new rear springs, shackles and shock absorbers, further enhancing the car’s drivability and comfort.
The history file is a lovely feature in itself and includes the original factory workshop manual, Haynes repair and owner’s manual, and the driver’s handbook.
The term “patina” is often used rather loosely in classic car circles, however this Moggy genuinely possesses an honest and attractive aged character that suits it perfectly. It feels like a car that has simply lived a good life rather than one that has been over-restored.
The paintwork shows some micro-blistering and minor age related marks, but the car presents very well overall and retains an honest, original appearance. The interior is all original, showing gentle signs of age that add to the car’s authentic character and charm.
Classed as a historic vehicle benefitting from free road tax and MOT exemption however for the next owner’s peace of mind it will be supplied with a full 12 months MOT.
Overall this is a very original and appealing Morris Minor that has clearly been cherished throughout its life. A delightful and usable Moggy that can be enjoyed exactly as it is, with character, history and a personality that is hard to replicate.
