The TR6 Trophy is the British bike from over here that did rather well over there. American enthusiasts took it to heart, nicknaming it the ‘desert sled’ for its offroad capabilities. This was the amateur racer that could be campaigned at the weekend, ridden to work on weekdays.
One of those enthusiasts was Steve McQueen, who reputedly loved his TR6 Trophy. Looking at this beautiful Regal Purple metallic example it is easy to see why. It is from the first year of ‘unit body’ production, a rare UK-market SS with twin exit exhaust pipes. Just 2, 397 of these bikes were built, only a minority of them in this specification.
- UK market bike with twin exit exhausts
- First UK registered 01-04-64
- VIN DU561 confirms it was built in early 1963
- Only 3 former keepers showing on V5c
Unit construction was introduced in 1963 and this is one of the first of those models
Only 3, 663 TR6SS were built of which only 2, 397 ‘unit construction’
Of these only a minority were ‘twin exit’ exhaust versions as most went to the USA
- Clearly restored to a high standard at some point and still looks excellent. It is fitted with a later magnetic speedo rather than the correct Chronometric
- Striking Regal Purple metallic with silver fuel tank
- Chromework in very good order with bright finish and no visible deterioration
- Starts easily, runs, rides (see video) and all gears select
