Ford billed the Capri as 'The car you always promised yourself' and some 1. 9 million customers agreed during the production years of 1968 to 1986. The original plan for the run-out of this European 'pony car' was to build 500 turbo examples with the assistance of independent specialist Turbo Technics. However, with 1, 038 chassis still needing homes, the ultimate decision was taken to christen them 'Capri 280' and equip each one with Brooklands Green paintwork, Red-piped Raven Black interior trim and 15inch seven-spoke alloy wheels. Around 10 percent of purchasers opted for the turbo conversion, while the remaining cars were normally aspirated. Even in unturbocharged form the performance was brisk, with 60mph available in 7. 8 seconds and a top speed of 130mph. Founded in 1981 by Geoff Kershaw, a former Garrett Ai-Research engineer, Turbo Technics turned their attention to Capris soon after. Ford’s 2. 8-litre V6 was an ideal base for tuning and power outputs were raised from a standard 160bhp to well over 200 bhp and even up to 280bhp.
