When Porsche unveiled the 911 Turbo at the Paris Motor Show in 1974, the Stuttgart marque took another major step in its story by translating into road use the technologies developed for competition. The Type 930 was drawn directly from research carried out on turbocharged prototypes entered in endurance racing, above all the legendary 917 Turbo. When it went on sale in 1975, it simply became the fastest production Porsche ever built.
The first version was fitted with a 3. 0-litre flat-six engine producing 260 hp. Its KKK turbocharger delivered exceptional performance for the time, but it also had a very assertive character. Power came on very abruptly once the turbo spooled up, unleashing spectacular acceleration that would cement the 930’s reputation. This unique personality, combined with the classic 911 mass distribution and its rear-mounted, overhanging engine, demands an experienced driver and would help forge the Turbo legend.
In 1978, Porsche updated the model with the introduction of the Turbo 3. 3. Capacity was increased to 3, 299 cc and, most importantly, the engine was fitted with an air-to-air heat exchanger (intercooler) to cool the compressed air before it entered the intake. This innovation significantly improved engine efficiency, increased reliability, and enabled a power output of 300 hp at 5, 500 rpm, while torque reached 412 Nm at 4, 000 rpm. Fuel delivery was handled by Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical injection, renowned for its robustness and accuracy.
To accommodate this substantial intercooler, Porsche redesigned the rear spoiler completely. Wider and flatter than on the early 3. 0 versions, it quickly earned the nickname “Tea Tray” and became one of the brand’s most iconic styling cues. Combined with the heavily flared wings, 16-inch Fuchs wheels and brakes derived from the 917, it created a silhouette that has become timeless.
With a top speed of over 250 km/ h and a 0–100 km/ h time just a touch over five seconds, the 911 Turbo 3. 3 featured among the most potent cars of the early 1980s. More than just a supercar, it embodies Porsche’s engineering expertise, pairing very high-end performance with outstanding build quality and impressive endurance credentials.
The example shown here was produced on 5 January 1981. Its “Certificate of Authenticity Porsche” confirms that it is still fitted with its original Type 930/ 60 engine as well as its four-speed 930/ 34 gearbox, making this car a genuine matching-numbers example. It is finished in its elegant original Zinc Metallic shade (code Z8), paired with a black leather interior.
Its original equipment includes, in particular, air conditioning, an electric door mirror, an alarm system and a black headlining. This Porsche has benefited from especially meticulous maintenance. In 2019, it underwent a major mechanical restoration at Porsche specialist J. Houyoux in Marche-en-Famenne, representing over €9, 300 in work. The work included replacing front and rear shock absorbers, wheel bearings, turbo seals, driveshaft gaiters, the clutch cable, differential bearings, as well as many gaskets and silentblocs. The entire braking system was fully dismantled and overhauled, with replacement of discs, pads and flexible hoses, while all four calipers were inspected and refurbished.
The engine received a complete service with an oil change, a new oil filter, the injectors were cleaned using ultrasonic treatment, and the throttle body was rebuilt. The care continued in 2020 at the Centre Porsche Carrera Motors, where nearly €6, 000 worth of genuine parts and additional maintenance operations helped round out this major mechanical history, demonstrating the constant attention paid to this automobile.
In March 2025, this 911 Turbo underwent an independent assessment. The report highlights its excellent overall condition, remarkable authenticity and the quality of its maintenance. The assessor states that no notable elements deviate from its original configuration and sets its replacement value at €125, 000 incl. VAT.
Today, the Porsche 930 is widely regarded as one of the great icons of the sports car world. As the first large-series 911 Turbo, it symbolises an era when top-level performance was achieved primarily through mechanical genius and the skill of the driver. This example brings together all the criteria sought by collectors: a matching-numbers configuration, an elegant presentation in its original colour, recently documented maintenance, and a recent assessment attesting to its excellent preservation.
