Conceived during the Second World War and developed in secrecy by Renault engineers Fernand Picard, Edmond Serre and their colleagues, the little 4CV rear-engined saloon was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1946. Series production commenced the following year and the 4CV quickly became a symbol of France's return to prosperity and affordable motoring.

With its rear-mounted four-cylinder engine, rear-wheel drive and lightweight monocoque construction, the 4CV was technically unconventional for its class. The 747cc engine produced between 17 and 21bhp depending upon specification, driving through a three-speed manual gearbox, while rack-and-pinion steering contributed to its surprisingly agile character. Production eventually exceeded 1. 1 million examples between 1947 and 1961, making the 4CV the first French car to surpass the million mark.

The little Renault also enjoyed a remarkably active sporting career. The competition-developed 1063 achieved class success on the Monte Carlo Rally and went on to compete successfully in events including the Mille Miglia and 24 Hours of Le Mans, demonstrating that the diminutive 4CV was capable of considerably more than its modest appearance suggested.

This 1958 example, chassis 3512864, is finished in an attractive olive green with its original interior, which is presented in fine condition. Particularly charming is the survival of its period fire extinguisher, while the car's overall presentation retains the simple and characterful atmosphere of the late-production 4CV.

The Renault underwent a comprehensive restoration in its native France in 2015, during which the engine was rebuilt and the bodywork was refinished in it's current shade of dark green. The Renault was subsequently imported into the UK in 2016, and accompanied by documentation covering its history since its arrival. Now UK registered, the car is presented in fine overall condition and is described as running well.

Adding considerably to its appeal (and of course practicality) is the accompanying ‘wheelbarrow’ trailer, a rare and wonderfully appropriate period accessory which complements the diminutive Renault perfectly.

With its French provenance, comprehensive restoration, original interior and delightfully unusual matching trailer, this charming 4CV offers a particularly appealing example of one of Renault's most significant post-war models.
