The arrival of the MGA in 1955 represented a decisive new chapter for MG. With its low-slung, aerodynamic bodywork and clean, modern lines, it was a dramatic departure from the upright sports cars that had preceded it. MG chose to unveil its new creation at the 1955 Le Mans 24 Hours, a deliberate move intended to demonstrate that the MGA's streamlined appearance was dictated not merely by fashion, but by performance.
The decision to produce the MGA had itself required some persuasion. BMC had initially been reluctant to proceed, having already committed to the Austin-Healey 100, but the remarkable performance of an experimental MGA prototype helped change minds. Fitted with a streamlined body, the prototype set a succession of speed records, eventually reaching an impressive 153 mph. Production followed, and the MGA proved an immediate success. Initially offered as a roadster, the range was expanded in 1956 with the introduction of the Fixed Head Coupé. With its elegant enclosed cabin, distinctive rear roofline and beautifully proportioned body, the Fixed Head remains one of the most desirable and arguably prettiest variants of the MGA.
This lovely low owner 1957 Mk I Fixed Head Coupé was acquired by the previous vendor as a restoration project in 2016, embarking upon a comprehensive programme of work completed in 2017/ 2018, coinciding with the car's 60th birthday. The restoration was extensive, with the engine, gearbox and rear axle all rebuilt, while the engine was replaced with a later 1, 622cc unit. A complete new interior was installed, including new carpets and headlining - the car was subsequently enjoyed by the vendor on the show circuit for approximately six years.
We understand over £15, 000 was spent on parts alone during the restoration, the accompanying invoice file provides useful documentation of the work and components purchased (we understand the engine was rebuilt at a cost of c.£4, 000 alone). Prior to sale the car has also benefited from a thorough service and comprehensive overhaul of its braking system. Work included the fitting of a new master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder, front and rear wheel cylinders and brake hoses, together with replacement of all fluids. Finished to a high standard, this MGA presents very nicely in all respects.
Presented on steel wheels and equipped with a chrome luggage rack and Mk II-style front grille, this handsome Fixed Head Coupé combines the elegant lines of the early MGA with the useful mechanical upgrades of the later car. The MGA is to be sold complete with file of invoices for works completed, current V5c and older green log book.
